Subject: Big Brakes Stock on 2003's!!
IP: Logged

Message:
While looking under new trucks at my local Dodge dealer hoping to find if I could adapt new Ram 1500 brakes to my '00 4X4 Dakota, I discovered that that would be difficult (the steering knuckles are WAY different, but also discovered that 03 Daks (and Durangos)have much larger rotors and big 2 piston calipers instead of the whimpy ones the rest of us have. It looks like calipers, rotors and steering knuckles (I havn't been able to confirm the compatability of front wheel bearings yet would make the swap work. Does anyone know anything more about this posible upgrade??

While some components are able to be homebrewed, exhaust, intakes for example, looking at aftermarket is more suitable for jobs like this one. Granted some of us are machinists, others prefer someone else to go through the design flaws so we can just bolt something on. Dakotas havent changed much since 97 but little things may make this job more of a hassle than it has to be.

Unfortunately I don't see any real aftermarket fix for this issue (certainly the Viper brake solution is obsurdly expensive and much more complicated, and powerslot rotors and hawk pads are a VERY minor improvement that just can't overcome inadequate design) and this looks to be simply bolting on the newer brake parts right out of the Dodge parts catalog, it seems very promising, but I still hope to find someone with a 2003 truck to compare meaurements with. It's obvious that the basic suspension geometry is the same, but I agree that the grief can be in the details.

Bigger brakes sounds tempting enough, but I think I'd even be more interested in upgrading to the 4 wheel discs. I wonder if anybody's done that yet.

It hasn't been done yet (not to my knowledge). 01QUADKOTA (Alan) and I are planning on doing it, depending on what kind of deal he can get through his body shop. I think we're going to go ahead and go all stainless lines as well.

Some Dakota owners have upgraded to 4 piston calipers and also 4 wheel disc brakes. One person who has done the viper upgrade and also runs a motorsports business is Scott Quaranta, you can reach him at 310-365-2607 or mquarantaca@earthlink.net

Stainless Steel Brakes Corporation did a full 4 piston caliper upgrade, but they only sell the rear setup for now. Go to there homepage and look at the project vehicles.

What I am hoping to do is upgrade to the new front brakes and then the Stainless Steel Brakes rear disc conversion, it is certainly reasonably priced for the gain it should give on my QC truck (I doubt that the lighter RC tucks could really gain much with more rear brake). The Viper type setup sounds really cool but since I don't autocross my truck I certainly don't need the heat capacity and fade resistance of those huge (and hugely expensive) brakes, I just want the truck to stop safely and quickly, which certainly no heavy stock Dak does. It looks to me like the front conversion should cost about $1200 (if the wheel bearings can be reused, which I think they can)which is the only really effective sounding brake fix I have found for a reasonable price.

Todd, you're looking at upgrading front pads/rotors and a single piston 11" rear disc conversion for $1200, but a complete 13" Viper setup which is much more effective is insanely priced at ~$1600???

What did I miss?

Maybe I'm missing something, the posts I have seen about Viper brake upgrades are talking about $3000 to $6000 depending on the cost of custom machining to make the system fit, if your numbers are right I would sure be interested, but it seems very optomistic based on what I have been reading.

I could do a set with all new Viper parts for approx $2500.

Email Scott Q mquarantaca@earthlink.net and get a quote. If it's ridiculously high, get back to me.

He quoted me $1500 for the entire front brake setup, but with used viper parts. Does he have the kit for the rear also.

Might want to get that clarified. That should be close to the full price for fronts and rears using takeoffs.

I have ~$1800 in mine and that's after getting the rotors cross drilled and cryo treated.

Hi Everyone,

The viper brake kits are "in stock" and ready
for shipment

800.00 is for the complete basic kit.

If your going to run stock R/T wheels there is
more machine work that's required and
$150.00 is the add on chg.

I can also provide you with a complete used
set of viper brakes for 750.00 pads are
sometimes still in the brakes, you may need
to get a set of pads.

Baer dose have a set of 2 pc. rotors that are
cross drilled and they are very nice and kinda
pricey at 240.00 ea.

The stock one's can be cross drilled for 55.00
per rotor and they come out nice .

There is shipping charges.....

That's about it on what your getting into on the
viper brake conversion.

Scott

any question feel free to call me at
310-365-2607
