I recently purchased an '87 Dakota 3.9L automatic(170,000). Per some previous threads I picked up on I have changed the coil (OEM) and the plugs (Autolite 3923's, gapped @ .035) and am having a problem. Once warm and attempting to shift into 3rd gear the engine will not respond to throttle, sputters, loses power, and will sometimes die while rolling. Trying to give it gas while this is going on will sometimes result in backfiring. Any incline I try to climb aggravates this problem, usually resulting in the engine dying. I tried taking the negative battery cable loose, hoping the Spark Control Computer would reset, no luck. Can I get some advice?
