Subject: Auto to 5spd???
IP: Logged

Message:
i have a 93 with a 318 that has,R/T cam, computer, 1.97 valves, highlift valve springs/retainers, full balancing, and mopar headers. I want to swap to a standard tranny, has anyone done this. V6 trannies seem to be falling out of the wreckers all over the place but i can't locate one from a V8. How much power can they handle. Can a V6 tranny be rebuilt to V8 specs? Any input would be appreciated

Even if you find a 5 speed to do the swap, you will need a lot of
stuff! I did it once before and will never do it again.

You will need a new engine wiring harness, PCM, neutral safety switch,
pedals (duh!), clutch master cyl and slave cylinder, trans mount,
steering column, axle yoke, flywheel and exhaust manifolds. There is a
lot to do and it is not that easy.

Also - if you have tweaked the 318 cid at all, forget the 5 speed. The
NV3500 is a pile of junk if you try to put any type of horsepower and
torque to it. Already been there and done that with my 318 a couple
years ago (340 flywheel horsepower and around 400 ft lbs torque). Kept
jamming up the shaft in the transmission with too much torque. Went
through three NEW NV3500s with the same results. Ended up returning to
the automatic set up. If you can find it, the NV4500 is a much better
trans for this application and will be actually reliable in the long
run. This was normally found on the diesels and larger Rams.

If you really want a manual transmission for your truck, buy one with it
already installed and then start from there.

What's the NV3500 and NV 4500? Is the NV3500 what they use in the 318 applications, or the v-6, or both? What's the difference between the two.

Is there a different 5spd for the 4cyl, 6cyl, and 8cyl? Are they interchangeable? Are they strong enough to handle a built up 318 and get beaten at the drag track?

I'm doing the same type of thing. I just built a new 318 and just put it in my '92 CC 4x4 Auto 318 Dakota. I'm currently looking for a reg cab 5spd Dakota that I can swap engines with. I'm looking for one with a 318 in it to save me work, because it should be an easy swap. But what if I can't find a good deal on one and have to go with a 5spd truck with v6 or possibly 4cyl?
