Subject: 4.7 Shift point for best ET
IP: Logged

Message:
Anyone played with the shift point on a 4.7 at the track to find out what gave the quickest ET? The one time I went to the track, I left it in drive(automatic) and the tranny shifted at 5300 religiously. I tried taking her up to 5800 on the street yesterday and was surprised to find that when it shifted to second, it felt like it stayed in a better powerband. The 3.55 gears may play a part in this too.

You can refer to track times part 2 on an earlier message. My best times were when I left it in drive and let the auto shift. Shifts were at
5300-5400 rpm.

The reason the truck felt stronger on the street after the shift was probably because at 5800 rpm it is 'way down on power. Idealy, you want to shift at the rpm giving about the same power as you will get at that speed in the next gear. Under-reving can hurt you two ways - not at peak when shifting, and too low after the shift. Over-reving can hurt too, as spinning too fast loses power.
