Does it hit OD, does it then matter going 0-60?

I drive a 4.7 5spd manual, so I really don't know, but I would think going to 60 at WOT shouldn't matter if it's on or off.

greg,

no bashing here, just wondering about this, OK?

I'm not saying it's not true, I don't have one, but,

why would the OD affect the rpm's in the lower gears? I thought it was a longer top gear, such as 4th, or in the newer cases, 5th. I thought that going thru the gears until the top gear wouldn't matter about it until the top gear.

Then, if you have the OD off, it will rev higher in the top gear only. Now, going 0-60 wouldn't be affected by this.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!-until someone who knows about this can disprove my theory. I'm no authority, as I don't even have an auto tranny. Just my .02.

Now, if it's a whole different of gears and ratios, like a lo-hi situation, then never mind, you're right.

If the truck is in over drive it doesnt rev as high no matter if your going 10 or 100,If its of the truck wil rev higher and longer.the o/d off is the faster way its like driveing stick it red lines. the o/d on it doesnt red line because it shifts gears sooner to save gas mils.

oh, ok, so it shifts sooner in OD, any gear, ok.

So without it it would be like waiting to the higher rpms before I shifted with my 5spd.

ok

I've been told that having the OD on or off changes the way the torque convertor locks up. I can't remember which is supposed to be best though.

I've tried both ways at the track and didn't see a difference. I usually run with OD off just in case it decides it wants to try to shift into OD and the end of the 1/4. But that hasn't happened either.

I HATE my stock lockup torque convertor!!

OD on or off has NO effect on how high the engine revs before it shifts. My both the R/T's i've owned have shifted the same with OD on or off at the track and on the street. The only difference it made was the TC won't lock up in 3rd gear with the OD on.

you guys are wrong, in my 4.7 auto when I'm cruising at say 45 mph and then I turn overdrive off my rpms rise, as much as 500

When you're CRUISING, as in the top gear, then it drops down out of the TC pseudo overdrive?

HOw much is really understood here about the way this actually works?

In the question, he asked about 0-60 times,in other words, WOT, but only to 60!

Think about it!

Overdrive does not change a thing unless you are in top gear. If your in top gear (overdrive) on the highway and turn it off, then it will slip into 3 (or 4).Of course the rpm's are going to jump.

I hate to throw a monkey wrench in this discussion, but...

I have DEFINITELY noticed a difference in shift points with OD on verses OD off on my 02 4.7 auto. I know this sounds odd, but, with OD on, my truck shifts into 3rd LATER than with OD off. I would prefer to drive around town with OD off, since the 4.7 really likes those higher rpms. But because of the sooner shift point into third, I usually leave OD on. This happens during normal acceleration, not even close to wide open throttle.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I just crazy?

I have a 92 RC 3.9liter magnum. It seems that my truck likes to lazy shift when starting off in OD. What I mean is, it seems to like to stay in fourth gear and not wanna go to first from a dead stop. However, if I start in first from a stop with OD off and launch it, there is no lag and it leaves a lot faster. In my opinion, OD does affect every gear. It lowers the shift points in all gears,(at least on my truck).

Don't know for sure, but I've heard it claimed that line pressure in the transmission is higher with the OD off. Might explain AndrewM and NOSDART's observations.
