my brother is currenty building up a 1960 VW bug, so he visits the aircooled VW forums and one of the guys posted this story...

"After some new tweaking on my new 2332, I went to the local track for test and tune night. I'd been working on the car for a while and felt like it should run pretty good. It had gone 13.04 before, but I was hoping for more. The test and tune at my local track is little more then a legal "street" race, with many cars running N/T on their windows and betting going on in the lanes and stands. Meanwhile the drivers are jockeying around to line up with a car of equal speed in the staging lanes.I see a guy about 50-55 years old with a new C5 vette pulling in on the way to the staging lanes. I ask him if he wants to line up with me."No" he chuckles" I came out here to race a fast car, why don't you race something more your speed? He points towards the Honda Civic staged behind him. I started to tell him about my car, but he quickly cut me off, adding" trust me son, it will just be embarrassing".I yielded and let the big block Chevelle behind me take my place against the Vette. I talked to the guy in the Honda, who was very cool.I didn't get to see what the Vette run, I was busy staging when his ET flashed and I missed it.I did a small dry burn out to get my Yokahomas up to the right temp. The traction felt good , the air was cool and dry. I knew my car was going to be fast as hell...... or break. I dropped the Stage2 KEP @ 4000 rpm when the last yellow light blinked on the tree. The tires bit into the track and the ol' bug jumped down the track. The motor slid me deeper into the slick vinyl seat at every gear change. The shift light on the tach flashed as the Oval literally screamed through the timing lights. I had hit redline in fourth gear! I knew it was a good time and was shaking a little when I drove to the timing shack to pick up my slip.Hee Haw! I wasn't sure what the snob in the vette ran, but I knew it was good chance I was a little faster.I went to hunt him down to show him my time, and soon found him in the pits with his hood up. A small crowd of teenagers was gathered around and he was showing them the marvels of the new Z06 small block.I pulled behind him, he barely looks up. I get out and walk up. "Man, that's a nice car, what did she run?" I ask."Twelve-ninety seven(12.97) " he proudly replies as he smugly pulled his time slip from his top shirt pocket and held it out.."hmmm, you was right, good thing we didn't race" I said, seeming shocked at his time."See," he said, "I told ya! it would just have been embarrassing""Yea, real embarrassing", I replied as retrieved my time slip from my back pants pocket and handed it to him " I ran 12.63!"His face turned red as I retrieved the slip from his hand. I shoved the slip back in my pocket as I headed back to the flat black Oval, smug in knowing my 46 year old economy car just bested Detroit's latest and greatest iron."

i thought it was pretty funny...

That's the difference between people who wanna prove something and people who wanna run. I'll line up against anything on the track. When I went on a test and tune night I lined up beside a Studebaker that pulled 7s. Sure, I got my ass kicked, but considering that it was my second or third run, it helped me get an idea of when I should launch (I saw him start moving before my leg did). I don't really care if I win, I'm just in it for the race.

I play alot of videogames (yeah, geek+gearhead==cash conflict) and I've found that I have more fun with slight losses to other people than all out domination.

That's the beauty of the drag strip versus a video game.... You can learn from your fellow racers, even if they are wiping the track with your a$$. Now that you've seen how early you need to launch (hopefully) you will continue to try an achieve that good a reaction time. Then, while you are working on that, you can be learning all kinds of other things like tire pressures, weight reduction, all kinds of stuff.

It's all about learning more & more....

V Dub power! notchlx and I both have older Dubs. I got a turbo charged '70 bug, and I think he has a '68 notchback (if I'm not mistaken). My bug puts 253 HP to the ground. Not bad for a 101.6mm x 69mm horizontally opposed air cooled 4 cylinder.

i have a similar story but i lost...

At the local track (1/8th), there was a guy with a brand new 35th anniv. SS Camaro. He saw me and started to talk and asked if i wanted to run him. I asked "why would i want to run you... i have a V6 TRUCK and you have a V8 SPORTS CAR?" I wasnt trying to get out of the race, but just curious... At that point he told me "oh my camaro is a V6 too." i was like right... besides all the 35th anniversary badging, the tone of a LS1 with an aftermarket exhaust and sure enough he had slicks on it. I told him i knew what kinda car i had but he still argued with me... but wouldnt open the hood. Sure enough he raced his other F-body friend but i caught up to him later and he ran a 8.88 and i ran a 8.95.. didnt beat him but should insult any trash talking F-body owner.

12.97 for a Z06 ???

That Z06 is slow. My Z28 ran 13.0 on street tires and headers. Old man probably couldn't drive.

a 12.97 is faster than your 13.0, so i guess yours is slow too.

But I only paid 15K for my Z, not the 50 Large that dude laid down for his "Z06". Heck, I've seen stock LS1's run 12.8.

Yes sir...I agree with Eric. I've seen guys in 03 Cobras run 13.8's, when they're rated more like 12.8's. It all depends on the driver, and conditions.
Had a good adventure at the track the other week...
Guy in a 99SS Camaro (auto) pulls up beside me in the staging lanes, and revs on me..I look over, and he's got that look on his face...the "I'm fixing to wax your ass grin"....I pretty much thought he would too. We get flagged out to the burn-out box. I turned them over a few times, and staged. We run a sportsman tree, and we both cut .170 reaction times, I jumped him in the 1/8th, and he couldn't come back around in the 1/4. The track was pretty slick this night, and we were both on street tires. I ran a 14.19@99mph, I got him by 3tenths. He felt like the POO! He wouldn't look at me in the staging lanes from then on out.

Being the underdog rocks.
