Subject: No cylinder pressure!!

Message:
Hey guys I need some opinions on what is up with my truck! Got a 2001 R/T and last week the thing died and computer code p0202 came up! When I would try to start it it would idle super rough like it was cammed and would blow smoke out the tail pipes! I took it to the dealer and they said that there wasnt any pressure in the # 2 cylinder! What does this mean???? Cuz he was givin me the run around and didnt exactly tell me what was wrong with it!! Any help guys?????? Is it the head?? block itself or maybe piston???

More information is needed. Were you just driving along, just come off the freeway after a 100mph run, at the end of a drag or what? It's real important to know to make a suggestion. So far could be just a head gasket, valve stuck, or worse dropped a piston. Is there any water where it shouldn't be? Did the shop give you any more of an idea of what could be wrong? Come back and let us know a few more things so we might be able to help. Good luck.

Drew,

If they did a comp. test, and that cylinder was too low, then all they could really say is that it lost it's compression somehow, maybe on of the ways you listed.

Without any further diagnostics, I don't think he was giving you the run around, could be many things, he might not know yet, and therefore, couldn't tell you 'exactly what was wrong with it'. Hope it's not too serious.

Did he say 'No Compression' or 'Low Compression'? Either way it could be many things. A valve could be stuck open, the head or block could be cracked, you could have blown a hole in the bottom of a piston (In which case you'd have -no- compression, burn a -lot- of oil, and probally notice gas in the oil as well. But this can be caused by other things to).

Like someone said, more info is needed. It's not likely that it ran fine when you parked it, then didn't the next time you started it. What happened?

I agree, without disassembling the engine they are probally not going to have more than a 'Well, it might be this' idea of what is wrong. In this case, with what appears to be a serious issue, they aren't going to want to tell you it's one thing and then find out it's something else. Let them take it apart and find out whats wrong, it's still under warrenty isn't it? I'd recommend trying to get a loaner, this may take a while.

I do get on it every so often but i wasnt at the time cuz I was broke and only had a half tank of gas! lol After that it would start up but would idle really bad and more times than none it would stall! He said that there was NO compression at all!! I have to call him today at 2 and find out more! Yeah it is under warranty thank god! I bought it from a chevy dealership in NC so They are workin on the loaner thing! Hope that helps a bit more!

Low compression=most likely a ring.
No compression=most likely a valve.
No compression and a clatter=most likely a rod.

I suppose it could be a ring, but aren't these engines equiped with three rings? Top, bottom, and an oil ring? It would take total failure of all three to produce excessive blowby, and even then he'd still have some compression I would think... maybe not much, but...

Either way we should find out soon after he posts what he heard from the mechanic :)

Do you ever rev it up to where you bounce off the rev limiter?? IS it stock, or do you have mods on it?

Bent Rod?

Huh, wonder if the bent valve and rod are on the same cylinder... could have been some foreign object in the combustion chamber. Valve is probally stuck open...

Keep us informed :) Hopefully they'll get it fixed quick.

Hopefully he ment pushrod and not connecting rod. One will be reletively cheap (your head's already coming off) and the other not so cheap.

Pushrod bent and Valve spring toasted?

GAH! You had something colliding in there! Either your valve was hitting the top of the piston or you had some debrie in the cylinder. Have them check that cylinder -real- well! In fact, I'd have them check the other pushrods and valves as well... make sure that they did check the valve head and top of the piston itself as well!

Ticking sound was the bent valve. You kept on driving and eventually the valve stem bound in place in the valve guide. Then the pushrod couldn't get it to move (at about 2500 rpm) and it bent..... then it was just rattling around in there. Wouldn't be surprised to see the mechanic have to pull the heads and get new valve guides etc installed.

While he's in there, go ahead and buy roller-tipped rockers and thicker pushrods from Crower or Crane, etc..... once you do get the mods in place, then you will be able to rev it up worry free.

yeah I had him check todd! He told me he made sure everything was clean and free of debris! Well he said he is gonna have it back together and ready to be picked up tomorrow morning!

Alex it was done at the dealership cuz it was under warranty still and I doubt they would put those in it! Or would they??? If not Im gonna have to do it down the road when it gets stroked!

Also is there gonna be a break in period for this.... Im not really sure! Im still tryin to learn!!

I sure hope they replaced the intake gasket, since they had to pull the intake off to get the heads off... :)

Man, that sucks. Hopefully they got it all straightened out now :)
