Ok, i have a 00 RC 4-banger. My parents got it for me when i was 16 (this was before i really cared about a fast car, i just wanted a car), back then this was an awesome truck. It got me around fine, but now i'm 19. I can't afford a new truck and i don't want to but a used one with high mileage, so i was thinking about adding a few mods to my dak and i want to know how much of a difference i will notice.
1)AIRAID Intake Kit +8hp
2)Gibson (or some kind) Exhaust +10hp
3)Venom 400 Controle Module + up to %25 hp
4)Jet Chip stage 1 +8 hp
5)Vortex Valve - www.vortexvalve.com +10hp
Now i'm not expecting to make my truck very fast and all theses mods together would add up to around $1000-$1500, then maybe ina couple of years i can afford a better truck. I just want some more get up and go. Also i want to get more top-end. Anyone who has ever driven a 2.5l dak would know that the 2.5l has very very little accel after 50 mph.

I've got a 99 2.5 with an intake and exhaust, still pretty slow. Thought about the chip.... As for the vortex valve, wouldn't waste the money, looks quite a bit like a Tornado Fuel Saver-expensive paper weight

I think krcperformance.com will make an air intake competitively priced with the airraid. It will probably be higher performing as well. There are some cams floating around out there as the 2.5L Dak engine is the same as the 2.5L Jeep engine. There is also a header, free-flow cats, exhaust (to save money just swap in a S.S. magnaflow muffler they actually make power)

Avoid the venom control module, avoid the vortex valves and that kind of crap. Also look into a 4.0L TB conversion. Shouldn't be that expensive if it can be done and would give you some good power. There is also a company out west that make a supercharger for the 2.5L if you wanted to get really crazy. Ignition work my be an option as well. Research the Jet chip on other 2.5L's before you get it so you don't waste money on it. I think Asechips.com has a chip for the 2.5L as well. The money you save from the venom, vortex valve and jet chip could go towards that.

Just do some research before you decide on crap like the vortex valve and the venom.

I don't know much about the 2.5L Dak, but I can tell you that any four banger needs to breath deep and rev high to make any HP. In your case, a good set of short gears would bring out some better 0-60 times.

Check out turbocity.com. They have a whole bunch of stuff for the 4.0L and 2.5L engines. KRC performance and Speedtweaks also offer some help for the four banger crowd.

Mr Need Help,

Your horsepower improvement ideas are way off. That is what is called ricer math. You would be lucky to add 10 horsepower with all those mods. Just for arguement sakes lets say your truck has 100rwhp as it sits right now. Using ricer math your improvements would bring you up to 161rwhp. In all honesty thats probably not a whole hell of a lot less than the Dakata R/T. If you have $1500.00 for improvemnts you would be better off buying a used 318 or 360 and doing a engine swap.

Hey man, not to under cut D but mine's even less. A 2000 R/T with 18,600 miles on it, still under warranty for $12,500. Maybe not for you, maybe to far away, but the difference in price between a used 4 banger and a used R/T is not enough to justify putting $1500 into the motor of a 4 cylinder and still fall far short of what a v-8 would be like. I don't know what kind of condition your truck is in but assuming it was as nice and low mileage as mine it would bring probably $7500. So you are talking a $5000 difference to step into an R/T, even less if you go with a Sport. Maybe your truck is not that nice, or has more miles but then again there are R/T's like that out there for under $10,000.

i can totally sympathize for your situation. i am only 20, but ive made my fair share of mistakes concerning performance. ive learned as ive gone. ive had 4 vehicles in my life.
1-1988 jeep cherokee with a bent frame that i got for $800
2-1986 pontiac grand prix 3.8...186,000 miles on it, then i switched to a 5.0 v8...after that it was the hugest money pit.
3-1993 jeep cherokee-motor went bad from inhaling a tad too much murky water in a 4x4 trip :(
4-1999 dak r/t- now that i actually somewhat know what im doing, and learned to stay away from low buck mods, it keeps more money in my pocket from not running to pep boys and adding crap mods every week. i look at pictures from all my vehicles, and i started out with the low dollar/high horsepower claimed mods, and now i tend to research and everything before i buy.

anyway, sorry about the novel im writing here, but if you are really really disappointed in the 4 popper...just buy an older dak with a v6 or v8..maybe the cost will justify the cause. aside from an intake system and exhaust, there arent a whole lot of mods that will give you 15hp for under 300 bucks....either that or fab up a turbo for the truck...couldnt be TOO hard...

good luck!

I'll have to agree that if you have $1500, an engine swap would be your best bet. Just check junk yards for low mile wrecked vehicles. This will add more HP than all the other mods put together and the engine will be alot less stressed.

Leave the truck alone
Take the 1-1500$ and save it. perosnally I dotn think its worth sinking 1500 in a 4 banger truck. you wont gain anything worth wile and youll jsut pi$$ away 1500$. Jsut drive the thing.
if you want to do something get a K&N filter and add a muffler liek a Flowmaster or Dynomax and leave it at that. its jsut not worth it. I mean if you wanna sped the $4 do it but its nto gonna do a whole lot. Youll gain mabey 15 HP. Also when you sell the truck all those mods will add up to nothing on resale value. if you wanna do soemthign get a better set of rims and tires mabey a tonneau cover or soemthing useful like a spray on bedliner which will up the value of the truck. if youre in southern california I have a mobile spray on bedliner business. i use the Vortex liner brand
If youre intrested give me a call

i already have a spray-on bedliner added, as well as a 6-disc cd changer, even with those i can't get $6500 for my truck, when i should get about $8000. I've tried trading it in.

Trade-ins are a joke. I was offered $1600 in trade for a 97 sunfire that I turned around on the street for $4200...and I was in a hurry.

Buy a book on sales. Be assertive and patient...there's someone out there who will pay what you want for your truck, but you'll need to do it on your own, and you'll need to be patient.

You can get a good piece of Salmon at the local market for $12.00 in 5 minutes, or you can wade in the river and catch your own for next to free if you have 4 hours on your hands.

That was a lame red-neck example, but hope it helps ;)

book was still $4200.

evidently dealers dont like tennessee pinstriping too much. f*ck em if they cant take a joke.

be patient, clean it up really nice, sell it out of your driveway...hell, throw it on ebay just for fun!

Totally agree. I stopped trading in cars back in 95. last time I went to a dealer I jsut had my dakota for about 2 years. i had added
Winch
winch brushguard
winch carrier
mud tires
Spray on bedliner
Tonneau cover
CD changer

they wanted to give me 11 000 for it on trade in. I laughed all the way home. I told them there is a 99 dakota 4x4 sport in the lot for 18 500$ so how can my 2000 with a V8 all options plus what I added on to it be worth 7500$ LESS. they told me because mine is modified itas worth less
Sell it yourself. i keep my trucks really clean and I jsut wait for the right buyer. if the guy comes within 2-300$ of my asking price i usually sell it otherwise I dotn. there will ALWAYS be the right buyer if you wait
