I have a 94 Dakota 318 magnum. The convertor is breaking up and I want to eliminate it. Someone please tell me the plusses and minuses of this.

I think it's illegal. If you remove the catalytic converter, your O2 sensors will be confused. I think you would have to get an O2 sim box so the sensors will think the converter is still there.
2000 4.7 CC auto, clear corners, Magnaflow catback, Kenne Bell s/c.

Your catalytic converter, as the name implies, changes hydrocarbon elements into harmless water vapor and therefore performs a valuable environmental service for us all. It is a common misconception that "gutting" or removing the cat increases performance, but the gains are miniscule while the drawbacks are major. As J says, it is illegal, and if you live in a state which does emission testing, you may have to replace it anyway. Do yourself--and us--a favor and buy a "high flow" cat (JCWhitney, BBK, Northern Auto Parts, or your favorite auto parts store, NOT from Dodge unless you're rich) and remain street legal.

i have read that some areas have a mobile unit.
they are actually cops trained to take exhaust readings,they have the power to fine you if your vehicle is relly screwwed up ,or pull your plates if the factory emmissions system has been tampered with.
the average cop on the street can ask you proceed to a licensed station for an inspection,at any time day or night.
where i live the vehicle has to be tested every 2nd year, any emmissions problems must be dealt with before your plates are re-newed.
