I was at a part store today and out of curiosity asked how much difference he thought a K&N drop in air filter would make as far as power was concerned. I was told 10hp! Is that close to being accurate in a 5.9 QC 2wd? I thought he was stretching it a bit. Also, how about mpg? Much difference with normal driving?

it wont give you 10 HP but you can tell it does much more than the stock air box. You will notice better throttle response but nothing like the K&N FIPK that is made for the 5.9L. It does improve mpg also but not much.

So, you're much better off if you can afford it to put the FIPK in?
I'm for the most part pretty mechanically challenged. Is installing the FIPK pretty strait forward for a non-wrench like myself, or would it be a good idea to have someone do it that knows what they're doin?

a k & n drop in is just that. if you have a 99 dakota, all you have to do is pop the hood, locate the air box, its the big black thing on the passenger side of the engine compartment, says 'magnum' on it. there are four clips that you have to disconnect with your thumb, or a screwdriver, 3 on the right side of the box, one on the back of the box. pull up and over to the passenger side, pull out the old filter, put in the new filter, reattach the box top, and you are done. its really simple, you can do it. i have a k & n in my truck (as well as a cold air tube, i use the factory box when its snowy and such) i like it because its pretty much paid for itself in a year by never replacing filters, and it does improve throttle response. good luck

I started with the drop in K&N (my very first mod!) It will improve performance some, but not 10 hp.

I replaced it with the FIPK which does provide a noticeable increase in performance and noise. The FIPK is easy and fun to install.

I will sell my "drop in" if anyone is interested. I think they cost about $42 new. Mine has very little use and is like new.
