I just ordered a set of 4.56 gears for my 2002 R/T this morning from "Randy's Ring & Pinion". The brand is Yukon and he says they are a very good quality and quiet gear. I got the gears with a mini install kit (for low milage) that includes pinion nut, pinion seal, crush sleeve, ect. all for $187.00, I thought that was a great deal. Since I only have 4000 miles on it, I didnt have to buy bearings. So those of you 2002 and 2003 owners....$187 for a swift kick in the azz, you cant beat it.

Yukon is supposed to be decent. That's Randy's "house brand".

Why don't you just put some real little wheels also, so you can feel like you increased your power? You could go 10mph in 1st gear at about 5,000 rpms! NOw that would be powerful.

The gears DON'T increase anything at the crank, you only think that because you feel more power from a shorter gear ratio. Top out at 80mph, no problem.

I always get a little laugh, when you give advise on mods, and talk about lowering the gear ratio, as if it does anything at the crank! Tractors have lots of torque too!

4.56's do add a nice change. Maybe you should get a bigger sized sprocket on your huffy and you could relate.

Low ratio, is your physics knowledge that low or does "low ratio" refer to your total IQ? Of course gears don't add HP at the crank but HP at the crank doesn't go anywhere without the rest of the driveline which of course includes the gears. The problem with lowering ratio with little tires is that they reduce the contact patch, the gears are a much better idea. The 4.56's don't actually have that big effect at 80 mph (it would take 8.56 gears for a R/T to hit the rev limiter at 80 mph) and even if the speed limiter is removed, if anything the 4.56's will improve the max top end speed. A Dakota is drag limited not geering limited. Most roller wheel dynos will show a HP increase for adding lighweight wheels, do wheels add crank HP? Of course not, but they do accelerate faster and they dyno picks up on it. A ring an pinion is a lever, a 4.56 set is a bigger lever. So what matters most is torque to the ground and the simple act of torque mulitplication of 4.56 gears -vs- 3.92 is about 50 FT-lbs more on a stock R/T at peak. HP is nothing more then a mathmatical derivation of torque, so if torque goes up (and that's across the entire RPM range), then HP goes up too. Tractors make torque because they are big diesels, then they are geared to make good use of that torque, if they run insane gear ratios it's to compensate for tires that might be 6 feet tall!

Hey Hersbird, nice info. But I have never heard that increasing the gear ratio that much could actually increase max speed. I have stock 3.21s in my 1990 2wd. I have been hesitating about going with 3.92 or 4.10s. Due to the highway rpms increasing so much. What is the formula for that increase so I can check these 2 gear ratios against my current one as far as speed goes. Thanks for the info. My email is joelliott82@hotmail.com
Thanks again.

And Texlawdog, thanks for the heads up on that deal. Its a good one and I appreciate your attempt to helps us other out too. Sorry you cought so much flack for it. Some people cant stand to keep thier sh!t to their own selves.
Later.

How are those 1.7 Harland Sharp roller rockers now since you have had a chance to try them out? Do you notice an increase in power and torque in the low to mid rpm's? Does it run smooth since there is no adjustment needed?

Thanks

The only reason you could actually pick up top speed with better gears is that the Dakota is drag limited. So if you have more power to push through the wind then you could increase top speed. Even with 4.56 gears, a R/T would have to be able to exceed 150 mph before it became gear limited rather then drag limited. If you increased engine HP and cleaned up the aerodynamics and were going for a salt flat run then sure, you'd probably actually have to go 3.55 gears, but if your not making 500 HP, and you aren't trying to set speed records, then 4.56 will not be a problem. There is a calculator at www.ring-pinion.com keep in mind that the final OD ratio in the transmission is 0.69:1 and that stock R/T tires are 28", the newer Sports run 28" or 29" tires and the 4x4's are 30" or 31".

Joe, do you have a overdrive on your 90? If not, that makes a big difference, then again they used to run 4.10 gears and 26 inch tall tires on old cudas with no overdrive, but they actually did turn some annoying RPMs on the freeway.

White and Red: I noticed a definate harder pull in the 3000 to 4000 rpm range. It seems to get from about 2800 to 4500 a lot quicker than before. But as with all bolt-on mods, its not drastic, its just another piece of the puzzle. I orderd my 4.56 gears yesterday and they should be here in 3 days, gears are supposedly the most noticable mod, aside from a supercharger or NOS. The main reason I went with the Harland Sharps is because I take most of my advice from John Mercedes at SoutheastRT and he suggested them. Another reason was the super easy install. I didn't want to go through all of the trouble involved in adjustable rockers like Crower, nor spend $450, Ive already been burned for $550 on the total rip off B&G Chrysler Flash.

Hey Hersbird, yeah I do have OD. So you think id be ok with something like 410s? Id love to run them but always worried about the highway revs. Thanks for the link to that calib. site. Ill check it out in a moment. Again, thanks for the ifo and help.
And Texlawdaog, dont let these lil jack offs get you down man. All they do is look stupid. Thanks for the gear hook up too.
