Hey Guys,
I replaced the dented aluminum driveline of my 2000 4.7/auto CC with a steel driveline. The local driveline shop said they could build a steel driveline for my Dak since my drive line was under 6' 6". They said 6' 6" is the longest length they could make a steel driveline. I think my driveline ls around 5' 7", something like that.
The replacement steel driveshaft has a annoying vibration from 45-50 on up. I took the truck back 3 times so far, each time they said,"yeah, it's driveline vibration". They work on it for a day, checking and balancing it and the problem is still there, though not as bad as when they first built it. They said the driveline is balanced good, tranny tailshaft bushing and rearend pinion bearing are also o.k., but they have not been able to resolve the vibration. I am going to put the back of the truck on jack stands, remove the tires and brake drums and see if the vibration is there when I spin the driveline at 45 to 80 mph. This should show if there is a problem with the drive shaft.
Does anyone know what could be causing the vibration. I think the shaft is either too long for steel construction, or they messed up when they built the driveline.

If you didn't have any vibration before installing the new shaft, then its the new shaft. Remember, when the transmission is in 3 gear(1:1), its rotating a engine speed. So at 2500 RPMs the shaft is rotating at 2500. Did they spin the shaft at speeds or static balance it. When we had shafts made for our race cars, the shop would spin balance them.

The old driveshaft was smooth as glass until I ran something over and put a dent in it. I don't know if they are statically or dynamically balancing it. I would assume they are dynamically balancing it since they do alot of race car work and I have been back 3 times for the same problem. I'll ask them when I take it back.
