Subject: Really need the 180t-stat?

Message:
The 180t-stat was one of the first mods I did to my '00 4.7L. Since then I've added a 360intakez, a 68mm Fastman TB, a 2.5" Carsound cat, and a 2.5" in/out magnaflow.

So the question is...do I really need the 180t-stat? I'm not gonna remove the clutch fan (it get way to hot down here in Ft. Myers), and I don't plan on swapping in an electric fan. So do I need the thing? I ask this because I think it may be hurting my fuel economy. My fuel economy isn't miserable by any means but i'm thinking it may be better if I didn't have the 180 installed. I get about 21mpg on the highway cruising about 75mph and 15-16 if I take it easy in the city.

so you aren't going to run a fan at all... you should leave in the 180... it helps especially if it get really hot in the summer. If you want to change the clutch style fan at least install an electric fan to replace it... it needs the airflow or it will constantly overheat...

I'm leaving all the fan components stock. I'm taking out or replacing anything. So the question is being that i'm NOT doing any of that...do I really need the 180t-stat?

CThomp, have you had a problem with pinging? If not, you are correct in assuming that you will get slightly better mileage with the higher deg stat. If you are leaving the clutchfan on you shouldn't have a heating problem, even in Florida.

Thanks Timberwolf. I don't think its doing a damn thing to help my performance. Especially since i'm leaving all of my original fan/cooling equipment stock. I've had no problems with pinging. I got the 180t-stat put in a while ago just to do it. I may just leave it in though if my mileage isn't going to improve much. I never had any heating problems when I had the 195 in.

If you can live with the slightly worse mileage, I personally would leave the 180 in. The hotter an engine runs, the more likely you are to build sludge which has been a documented problem with the 4.7. Don't freak out or anything, but make sure you change your air filter & oil reguarly and get the engine flushed(professionally, not a can of Gunk)every 50,000 - 60,000 miles. I use synthetic anyway, but I would recommend everyone with a 4.7 use it because it doesn't break down or sludge like dino oil.

I've always run synthetic so i've nevcer worried about sludge. I've only got 42K miles on my dak so far. Pretty remarkable considering i've had it for 3 years now. I figured I'd be up to 60K by now. I've always used valvoline synthetic which my engine seems to like.

Thanks for the help

CThomp,

I've been to Ft. Myers, even pulling my 20ft catamaran sailboat, in my 4.7, ALL WITHOUT MY BELT CLUTCH/FAN!

I live in a hot climat as well. If you use your a/c, then your stock electric fan is ALWAYS ON, not just when your compressor kicks in. If you're going over about 30mph, fans do nothing much anyway.

I also have the 180t-stat. I was concerned at first, so like others have posted, I kept the clutch/fan close by in case. My gauge has never made it to half way. That includes idling at the beach for over an hour, so my 2 year old son could nap with the a/c on, in 100F weather-idling only, no hot engine with only the stock elec. fan going.

I can't believe you think the 180 is affecting your great gas mileage!

I really enjoy the free accel. and HP with this quick, easy, free, mod. Takes all of 20 seconds to put it back on!
