i have a dynomax muffler right now that is dumped before the rear axle. dont want to blow $300 on the gibson super street truck side catback exhaust. that same tip cost $30 from them and i already have a decent muffler. mainly want to do a side exhaust to add to looks and reduce a lil exhaust tone b/c it is crazy loud. problem is that i would have to cut the head pipe out between the muffler and the cat. so should i just cut the cat out totally b/c i think it took a crap on me after 65k miles. everybody around here in SE Mi has dual exhaust out the back and i want something different. also should i get a shop to bend me the pipes and weld or should i just use store bought pieces and clamps. thanks

I have a single pipe exiting before the rear tire. I had a muffler shop bend the pipe. Here's the deal. It's really hard to get the pipe snug with the body, which looks the best.

Here are your options. My pipe exits the muffler and is swept to the side, goes under the chassis and straight out the side. It's the most basic setup you can do. Problem with this setup are as follows: It does't look that cool because the pipe comes straight out. I think it looks better swept back a little. Also, the pipe hangs kind of low. Not low to the ground, but just not snug with the body.

I think I'm going to go back to the shop and see if they can bend the pipe up, then back and level to get it swept back and snug with the body. However, this would require some pretty fancy bending, and I'm not even sure if they can do it.

Spintech makes a setup like this, and their setup actually goes over the chassis, down and then out at a swept back angle. The pipe is bent pretty wicked to get it like that.

So, it's pretty simple to get this setup, it's just gonna take some good pipe-bending skills to get it to look right.

Here's what the Spintech looks like. Remember, this is the one that goes over the chassis.

And here's the wacky bend they put on that Spintech to get that great snug, swept back look.

There's really not a lot of room to work with down there, so it's pretty tricky. I want an exhaust shop to rig me up a pipe like that. I guess I'm going to have to look around, cause I don't know who'd be up to the challenge.

*Also note, to save room, the Spintech enters and exits the same side. So, in the above picture of the red truck, the muffler is actually next to where those pipes are exiting. Like I said, not a lot of room to work with. Good luck.

Anyone ever seen this done on a quadcab? I've been thinking of having a muffler shop try it, but I wanted some pictures to give them if possible. The QC has a lot more front to back length to work with. I wanted to do this on both sides, but that would mean running the left side pipe under the gas tank and drive shaft. probably not possible, so probably just right side only.

hey The Dude, those pics really help. thanks. that swept back angle is perfect. im gonna take the pics a shop to see what they can do. also, should i cut the cat out or keep it? it kinda rattles so it might be shot. a friend of mine has the exact lighnting muffler and tips from a junk yard on his 99 dak but it hangs really low b/c of the frame. so going up and over the frame is the best choice.

I have a flowmaster mounted pretty high, and the pipe goes above the frame, then drops down in about the same place y'all are talking about.
You can only see about 1/2" of pipe, it isn't very visible at all. I had a REALLY good exhaust shop fab it up.
I've got a 3 chamber flowmaster, 3" cat and 3" pipe.... its, um.... darn loud.

Strat79, I have a QC. There is more length to work with and at the same time there isn't. Because the QC has such a large cab, that automatically rules out that section of the truck. On my QC, an '02, the muffler shop was a bit limited by a few factors.

First off, the stock hanger. The shop always wants to keep the stock hanger, it's less work for them because it's already there. Plus, that's where a hanger is supposed to be...that's why its the factory hanger. Now, the factory hanger is connected to the top of the stock muffler, right smack dab in the middle. So, with an aftermarket muffler, unless you weld the hanger to the top of the (aftermarket) muffler it's going to be very far back because what was the middle of the factory muffler, is now the end of your aftermarket muffler. This means you have very little room to work with. This is what happened to my truck when I first took it in to the shop. The muffler was so far back that they had to route the pipe under the front of the rear leaf spring mount. Needless to say, it was very low.

Now, I took it back (after taking a peek underneath the truck). They cut off the old hanger, cut off some more factory pipe, and pushed the muffler up towards the cat a little farther. They then welded in two new hangers for me. This is also limited as there is a cross bar going across the chassis that gets in the way, so you can only go so far forward, unless you're like Mr. Hoss up there who says his is mounted high, which is a good thing.

I'm actually going to try and take mine to another muffler shop (after two trips I feel like I'm just bothering them). I think I'm going to try and see if another one has the balls to go up, over, and back down the chassis then swept back out to the side.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but that's the low-down on the QC and side exit exhaust (yes, this will all be on the exam).

I had a muffler shop bend a pipe for me so it fit over the frame. there is a spot where the bed and frame have a large gap right in the area of the passanger side leafspring front mounting bolt. it looked way cool but it was louder than you know what. i ended up cutting it back out and going out behind the tire. cost was abotu 30 for the pipe and bending and welding. ive been going to this guy for a while so he said usually its abtou 50$

The Dude, thanks for the post. Looks like this will be a lot more complicated than I first thought. I have the factory running boards on the QC, and they run to the rear edge of the back door. There is an additional "accent kit" that Dodge sells to finish off the pickup bed in front of and behind the rear wheel. I wanted to punch a hole in the accent kit piece in front of the rear wheel and have the exhaust tip angled to exit through it, but that would require that the exhaust tip be very high up, close to the body, not hanging low..

back to the drawing board..

Plus that accent kit you are talking about that attaches to your factory running boards has a slot cut out on the back-passenger side for the factory exhaust. It would look kind of bad without the factory pipe there and just a void where there is a slot for the pipe.

Why do I know this? I was thinking of doing the same thing until I saw this.

Good point, I just noticed that on the picture of the accent kit. Oh well, I guess the option would be to just leave off the rear piece behind the rear wheel. Or maybe I'll just have to skip the accent kit altogether and do the side exit, or go with another alternative exhaust like the MBRP 'cuda style that exits thru the roll pan..

Thanks for the help Dude..
