Message:
A good buddy of mine has an older style monte carlo ss with the 355(i think) and he wants to race. I have a 93 dakota extended cab 4x4 with the 318, a few mods like performance computer, holley throttle body, and aftermarket 3" exhaust. His is mostly stock except for the new set of slicks he just got. Would I be a fool for accepting this challenge, or do i have some chance or hanging in there? Like I said, mine is an extended cab 4X4 so I probably outweigh him by more than a ton.
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Statisticly, you wont win this one. But if no money is on the line and he's not one to rub it in your face everyday, go for it. He might be a poor driver.

I doubt you could take him.Like you said, you have alot more weight to get moving. If you weren't in a 4x4,I'd say you'd prolly smoke em...the Monte Carlo SS was a pretty slow car in stock trim. But I think it could take a 4x4,unless you had some sorta power adder....give it a shot...you never know.

I honestly think it would be a pretty good race. Monte Carlo SS's were loafs. They only had 180hp.

THEY ARE SLOW!!!! The monte and and monte SS were almost the same car. Same motor but the SS had duals and some other minor difference. Overall HP was negligable. I know I'd walk all over a stock SS.

if he does have a 355, youre in trouble...big trouble. if it was a typo, or hes lying and has a 305, you might take him...there is one detail no one has jumped on...the monte is using SLICKS. i had a monte ss, and i could barely break the tires loose brake-torquing. the odds are he really does have a 355 (thats a super easy sway, and also the remedy for my lack of power i stated up there) and you are in trouble. if hes a friend, go for it and find out what happens...i wouldnt put more than $5 bucks on it though, especially if he needs slicks.

I'm not sure he actually NEEDS slicks, he just has too much money to throw around, so he got a set.

The words/phrases "Too much money to throw around" and "Monte Carlo SS" are not often heard in the same sentence, if you guys catch my drift. Sorry, but that just makes me chuckle. Of course no one in their right mind thinks my '70 VW Super Beetle has 253 RWHP and can litereally lift the tires off the pavement at any speed, either. My "little" bug proves that anything goes, so long as there is a sufficent flow of greenbacks (not illegal, either).

Well, today was race day. Man, that was probably one of the closest races I've ever raced in. He got me off the line as i sat and spun a sec, but when my performance computer kicked in and spiked the RPM's to 5,200 I quickly made up what i lost off the line, up to about 90 MPH we were dead even, after that his car seemed to be pretty gutless as I pulled ahead and was about 15 yards in front at the end of the race.

Another notch in the belt, i guess, next to all the countless 4-bangers and Stangs.

Dude its a big car. i think they weigh close to 2 tons. literally like 3980 pounds. Also the stock 305 is probably a TBI model and they have no top end power. They arent fast at all I think they were rated at 180-190 HP which isnt a whole lot. My 89 GMC sierra was faster than those things and I was completely stock doing mid 15s at 88-90. I could keep up to a Mustang GT no problem. all the monte carlos I raced were pretyt slow. Flowmasters dotn do anythign for power ( mabey 5 Hp which youll never notice) they jsut make noise. You should be able to keep up to him easily

I had an 87 Cutlass, virtually the same motor/trans as any of the 81-88 GM G-bodies. They are slow cars, the SS is slightly faster. The only one I would worry with is the Buick GN. That v-6 turbo is QUICK. Now, if it's the early 70's Monte, then watch out.

It's all for fun though, so don't worry.

Also, the 80's monte's had the 350 or 305 (V-8 wise), and some had 307's (built by Olds). The 305/307 had about 140 hp and the 350 around 170 (est.)

stock 305 GM's were mostly dogs unless some work was done to them, I owned early 80's Monte Carlo's(not SS) and only after we did some mild top end engine work and exhaust did it move like a V8 should in a heavy car. I also owned an 87 GN just after I graduated high school, loved that car and wish I could find another one that wasn't beat to sh!t or costing $30K. Unforunately I never keep cars anymore than 2-3 years and my GN was no exception(dumbass) when I traded it for a 89 IROC-Z, another fun car and I owned 2 more IROC's after since the GN stopped being made in 87 and I couldn't get another new one:( IROC not stealthy like the GN, looked like a grocery getter to most peeps that didnt know what it was:) Ahh, those were the days... still living at home and nothing but funny money for new fast toys.

I know that you guys say you can take a stock monte carlo because you have modified cars...if you were to race a modified monte you would lose...Expecially if they dropped a 454 in that piece...then you all go cry to your mommies...haha, but see you are not the enemies its those damn Rice Rockets that have lawn mower engin in them and sound like them too. Sound like they are constipated. Need to get some real power and not fake turbo $hit...
