Subject: leaf spring traction bars?
IP: Logged

Message:
Went by autozone today and they had a set of chrome traction bars for $30. Are they worth the money and time for install? Going to the track on the 17th, and if they'll help I want to get them on before then. Any input would help.

Summit has some longer ones (I don't know the P/N off hand) that work better and won't require any shims to work well, hold out for those ones. iirc, they were something like "Lakewood Heavy Duty Traction Bars"

P/N 22026. $59.95 from www.lonestarperformance.com. If you can find them (good luck) P/N 22030 is the black ones.

how low do these bars hang? I want a set of track bars. And see alot of lifted 2wd with them but am unsure of how much ground clearance I can give up for the benefit of them.

Pretty low, but I've never hit them. Click on my thumbnail to get a basic idea.

If you adjust them right (using a shim) they still have about the ground clearance of most car bodies.

Not on a stock height QC, the mounting plates for the springs are about the lowest point. If yours is dropped then maybe so.

I just took another look at those, they do look like they'd be a bit higher. On the standard ones that I have, unless you add a shim the spring's angle makes them point downwards. (stock hight 2wd cc). I have a 3/8" thick shim on the rear mount and the bars as far forward as they'll go and they're about level with the ground and hangs down a total of about 3" from the spring (measured from just infront of the axle). Either way, they're the lowest parts on my Dakota.

I wouldn't do it with the 2" blocks in there. With them, the bottom of the spring is 2" closer to the ground. Assuming the tires are the same the axle centerline is at the same height as it was and the springs have been lowered 2" beneath the axle. That is if I'm thinking right without crawling under it.
