Subject: Turbo? Cam? Help! :-)

Well I have decided to get a little more involved with mod's on my SLT Durango. I have a few bolt-ons and with the extra 2,000lbs that I am carrying around that most of you dont have, I need to go big... no more of these 5-10 horsepower mods ;-) So what do you think is going to be the best way to get this beast moving? Turbo-Charger? New Cam? I'd prefer to wait on nitrous. But yeah I'm clueless to what would be the best... so any input would be much appreicated.

Thanks guys!
R.

Throw in a cam for a good gain that's cheap or go the supercharger route and see lots of power. Or save your money for a rainy day. Best you'll see is 0-60 7 second 1/4 in 15.2 just like the Shelby Durango with 360hp supercharged 5.9L You might be faster who knows. But is that worth the money for you? Even then the little Celica's and Eclipes with be bitting at your heels if not beating you still.

Before you go with any other mods you need to upgrade that throttle body. You have the M1 and an intake with no throttle body! Other than that if you want to see some good gains go with a cam and roller rockers. Those two will give you a very nice gain for minimum money. Hope that helps. BTW a friend of mine dynod his TB from the stock one and he gained 22RWHP with just the TB alone!!

I think you need to either supercharge it ($3500 - $4000) or else make that 360 into a 408 stroker ($5000 to $7500 all told).

That's your two most effective options.

Why do you prefer to wait on nitrous? Its the cheapest mod for the most horsepower you can buy. You can safely run a 100HP shot all for about $500

Cam and Rockers your looking about around $600-700 total for about 50HP at the most.

Cheap, easiest, noticable and most fun is nitrous!

No need for rockers, power gains come from lift and duration more than resistance.

Who cares for NOS, so how much does it cost to fill the tank? I think he's looking for all the time power more than just a cheap go fast a few times and cost you every time.

I would say NOS is too risky.

I think a 408 ci Durango would be the perfect sleeper. Looks huge and heavy (it is), looks like a stock 5.9 with the M1 manfold and nothing much more than that...... but it's got 408 ci and with the right internals, you could have yourself a 500 hp family SUV. Naturally Aspirated.

Hahahaha

Basically, it goes like this:

Take the 360 motor (I am assuming your Durango is a 5.9) out of your truck, gut it of the rods, pistons, and crank shaft. Then bore the cylinders out by .030" and replace all of those pieces with the appropriate stroker kit from any of the big motor boys (Hughes Engines, KRC, Fastman, Muscle Motors. This will be the Mopar Performance 4" stroker crankshaft, the appropriate pistons and connecting rods, and fasteners.

This alone will result in your motor now displacing 408 cubic inches. You already have the M1 manifold (from your mods list), then you just add a set of headers, a huge exhaust, some Mopar R/T heads with a little head work, a huge throttlebody, the correct cam, some fuel system enhancements, and your motor will produce around 450-500 horsepower at the crank. All day every day. No bottle to refill, no supercharger to worry about overheating, no twin turbos that take a long time to install and engineer..... just a big-ass'd motor.

It will look completely stock (except for the M1 and the headers) and it will bolt right back into the exact same mounts that it came from. All you're doing is changing out the guts of your original motor.

More stroker possiblities...

Let's say you don't have but a 5.2L in your Durango. With the stroker kit that will fit the 318 motor, you apply the crank, the connecting rods, and the pistons and your 318 becomes a 390 cubic inch motor. It will take a few more radical parts (ie- less driveable on the street) to make 500 hp, but 400+ is in the bag easily with most of the parts listed above.....

The fun part about the stroker is the huge torque. The 408 w/ 500 hp should make more than 500 lb-ft of torque and the 390 should make 400 to 450 lb-ft of torque.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Str-o-o-o-o-kerrrr... gllglglglgl (Homer again)....

Wow alex, this sounds great! I'm sure I'll have tons of questions about this but here are the three that stick out in my head right now...

1) Who would I get to bore everything out?
2) Would anything behind the motor need to be replaced to handle all the power?
3) Around how much will this run?

This is gonna be fun...
Later,
R.

KRC Performance is pretty much **THE** Magnum Motor Guru here in the southeast. If I remember you are here in Atlanta, so it's only about a 6 hour drive to Cocoa, Florida (where his shops are). There are many options....

1. You can buy the kit itself and find a good machinist here to clean the motor, bore it out & install the parts.

2. You can buy what's called the "short block" already assembled. Then you add the heads, intake manifold, throttlebody, headers, and allll that stuff (accessories). Those run pre-assembled for around $4500 depending on what level of parts you want to use.

3. You can buy what's considered the "long block" which is the short block assembly listed above, with the heads you choose, the intake manifold you choose, and whatever else you prefer. Usually you need to supply your own accessories (A/C, alternator, etc that's already on your truck), but the majority of the stuff is already bolted together. This is the most expensive way to do it, but it takes your worries away because you had a pro do it, right? Right...
This will probably cost you about $7500 or better to get it to "monster motor" status as far as power.

There are shops around here that will help you do the install, and mostly up in the Duluth/Pleasant Hill/Buford Highway area, but they may charge a pretty penny.

I'd go to Marty's site at www.krcperformance.com to do a little more research. Hughes Engines is at www.hughesengines.com and there are others....

If you want some reading to get you really excited, go get the March 2003 issue of Truckin' magazine. There's a humongous Dodge section. There is a write up on Scott Quaranta's 408 motor. There is a separate article on how Scott installed his Paxton blower, and there's another article on Scott's Spin Tech Exhaust system.

That should give you some ideas on how to make a Durango fast....
