Read the direction for this seemingly simple mod on the DML page. That way is the VERY long way here is what i did. for my 3.9 CC

Bought a little siphon thing from walmart ($2.97) about six feet of clear tubing with a bulb on it to start the flow. Opened the radiator cap which odly is not on the radiator but inline in the hose to the engine. I siphoned all the coolant i could from the tube then removed the tube from the radiator (slight leakage here) the siphoned about two gallons from the radiator itself into a clean bucket (i reused the coolant because it was very clean and my truck is only 6 months old). I then used a 1/2 inch socket on a 8 inch extention to remove the bolts from the thermostat housing, pulled up and viola no messing with the alternator, belts or any of that other crap. I admit scraping the old gasket off took a little while but no biggie. I you have a few hours do it the way that DML guy said to, if you have less then a hour do it my way.

Autozone here in NC had the Robert Shaw 755-180 and they are open 24hrs! cool, they did not however have the exact matching gasket i had to slightly modify one meant for a ford.

hope this helps soomeone who like myself is a little weary of messing with the serpentine belts ect.

I've been doing it like that for years...and they said it wasn't possible. Thanks for pointing out the excellent tip to the DodgeDakota's board Geoff! :)

I did mine the same way BUT, it took a little longer because the hose clamp was slightly too large to pull straight up, had it manuever it, etc. With lunch and a rain break, took me 2 hours.

Hey Geoff, All the Autozones here around Raleigh say they don't have the Robert Shaw T-Stat's! Where did you get yours in N.C. I would think any Autozone would be able to draw from the others stores!

Couldn't you just as easily drain the coolant out of the drain plug instead of siphoning it?

I heard that those plugs are either full on or full off, an i heard that some stuff around the airdam has to be removed or it makes a mess. The siphon thing cost less then three bucks

The 5.2 & 5.9 have the thermostat located on the
TOP of the engine, connected to the upper
radiator hose

----------------

The thermostat pn the 4.7l engine is located on
the bottom of the engine.

Follow the LOWER radiator hose to the bottom of
the engine. You will have to remove a black plastic "splash guard". Then you can lay on your
back and look up at the thermostat.

By the way, make sure that you drain the radiator
completely before removing the thermostat !

I would think that you would then remove the lower radiator hose, and drain that fluid into another
bucket or two.

Then there are 2 bolts that hold the thermostat in

I haven't changed mine yet, but I think that having the thermostat on the bottom on the engine
will be a pain to deal with.

Good Luck !

I was lookin at mine trying to deside the best way to change it, and i pulled and pulled on that splash guard. How the hell does it come off? I didnt want to break the little plastic pins that hold it in, so i didnt put too much effort into it. I wonder if my parts department could get me some of the mounting parts incase i really screw it up. anyone have any tips on how to get that blasted thing off? thanks...

Glen,

Had to rip that thing off 3 times now on my 2000.
Don't worry, I've used a small crowbar to yank the plastic pins as well as vise grips and water pump pliers. Usually manage to salvage about 1/3 of them.
Good news is that Poop Boys(others I'm sure) sell replacements for about $ .69/pair.

Go ahead-it's therapeutic

For the 4.7 just undu the thermostat housing and put a big bucket under it and let all the coolent fall in there. Then when re-assembled put the new dex-cool coolent in it and thats it. Using the same coolent is fine but just replace it and it an other thing you dont have to worry about.
