Which headers for the 97 5.2l dakota fit the best and are the best overall compromise for midrange torque. i was looking at the ones Summit sells for $159.00 (I was told Flotech made them)also the Edelbrocks look like they are well made and include a crossover also. Is the crossover replacement really needed or just window dressing?? I have a small hughes cam I think it's the 1418 and M-1 intake.

The crossover does make a difference. I would look at the PPH/Mopar headers. PPH makes the Mopar headers but also sells them under their own name, usually cheaper. Best quality and include a mandrel bent crossover.

Do you have an auto or stick? KRC has a set of PPH headers, already ceramic coated, in his overstock section for only $375. The headers alone usually cost more than that.

I have the PPH headers on my 97 and they arent that great. It seems they constantly have to be tightened beyond the intervals they recommend. If you dont keep up with the tightening you are gonna constantly be going through gaskets. I have a 5 speed and i dont know if it makes any difference but the clearence is very tight. Every small bump i hit the headers will hit the frame. I also had to wait 3 months for the PPH headers. I recommend them as good headers but you should just go with the edelbrocks. A guy on here has a dyno chart of his 97 318 with the same setup as yours with the edelbrocks and had great results.

dakdtp, did you cut off the sheet screw that holds the heat shield to the fire wall? that is what usually hits the primary.

i have a 98 5.2L 5 speed, with the same headers and y-pipe, and 3" exhaust, and nothing hits the frame. (i dont think they changed the frame from 97 to 98)

oh i just remembered something....i used a Y-pipe off of a auto. it fits good around the NV3500. i didnt want to wait for them to get the 5speed pipe, so i was going to mod the auto pipe and it ended up working great!

The headers issue-- one cause of this-- bad/worn motor mounts. How? Mileage and age causes them to sag/crack and or fail completely... Though the headers run tight inside the frame rails, engine movement should not allow for more than 1/2" of side-side. Over time, the constant flexing (with a 5 spd especially-- you put more torque down than an auto, plus gearing down does the opposite pull on the motor mounts)-- can loosen things up--- you probably have gone through a few collector gaskets I would imagen-- plus the rear header bolts. Common with worn motor mounts and or TIGHT aftermarket exhaust (solid hangers vs. rubber isolated with some give in the exhaust system front-back). I went through this on my '95 5 spd, and on my '00 RT-- Did the mounts, changed the hangars... no more problems. You also get bolt stretch in the headers themselves, which should end during the tightening interval described in your instructions. If everything checks out, you can go with 'shear' nuts on the collectors-- will go on, but you'll have one hell of a time taking them off-- aka semi permanent!

I recently installed JBA headers and Y-pipe on my truck and the flange for both the header and Y-pipe on the passenger side where hitting the frame. I ended up taking the header off and doing some grinding on it and also ground down section on the Y-pipe flange that was hitting. The Y-pipe was worse because it was always in contact with the frame. Although I did think of motor mounts I did not check them because I figured it was just the header. Maybe I will take a look at them today.
