Subject: 5.9 short/long blocks??
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking at the 360 short and long blocks from Mopar and have a few questions. I was looking at the MPI Magnum short block (P5007549). This is the shortblock that I want but it says it has cast pistons. I am planning on running a 75-100 hp shot of N2O so this is unacceptable. I look at the “Magnum” short blocks (P4876906) and (P4876913) and they have hypereutectic pistons. But the lifts of these two cams at .501/.513 are above the lifts magnum heads are allowed. It is .500 correct? I am planning on using “cleaned up” stock heads, 3 angle valve job, and a bit of smoothing and cleaning. The deck heights are different between these blocks at 9.56 to 9.595. Will this be a problem?
If the .501/.513 lifts are ok for my stock heads then what “Magnum” short block, compression ratio would be better for my combo? Cleaned up heads, Mopar converter, 4200# CC, 3.55 gears, and M-1 manifold, (P4876906) 9.5:1 CR or (P4876913) 10.5:1 CR. Is the deck height difference going to hurt intake manifold sealing? Is this cam to much for the heads? To much for a daily driver 4200# truck w/ 3.55 gears? I still need the torque to get my fat ass moving.

To throw another log into the fire. Can the 300hp long block (P5249498) work with my SMPI fuel injection? Are the “swirl port” heads they refer to in the description the same as my stock heads? And just to go a bit more wild what about the 380 hp long block (P5249499)? Same questions as above but also why will this not work with air conditioning? These two long block have hypereutectic pistions correct?

And yes the trans. will be rebuilt to handle the extra fun!!
Sorry this is so long but you can never ask to many questions befor doing this.

Thanks for all help,

Nathaniel

I dont see no reason why you cant use the 300 Horse 360 with your M1 it should rock pretty good as for the BIG CAM it might cause problems due to vaccum issues. But there is also a 402 MAGNUM BLOCK that is available through MOPARTSRACING.COM check it out Hopefully this helps

I've wondered too. My guess is the 300 hp should run ok, might be slightly lopey at idle. Most of the time, parameters of plus/minus are programmed into the pcm to allow for slight variations in combos. Again, guessing and also based on my past ford experience. the 380 hp will probably be too wild for the factory pcm but I'm sure in the near future, someone will be doing this and all the answers will start coming.

That's gotta be a typo on the 300 horse 360 specs. My catalog states that the 300 horse engine has a .385"/.401" cam. Very tame. That would be pretty sad with an M1.
The 380 horse version is a RACE engine. Very lopey. No way will it work with factory PCM. This is the engine you slap a big carb on, drop into a Duster and run high 12's with it. That would be why it's not friends with the Air Conditioner.

I wondered if it would not be friends with the AC because maybe it's not drilled for the AC bracket?

No, it's a hard running, lopey, race engine. Swap in a mild cam and it'll do fine with the AC. Mopar Perf reps say that most of the fellows who get the 380 horse model (for street use) wind up swapping in a milder cam and some also swap in a dual-plane M1 because, as shipped, the 380 horse unit is just too fussy for a street engine for most preferences, especially is you want AC. One crate 380-horse 360 was profiled in a Mopar Magazine and with a little tweaking on the carb, hit 409hp at the crank. That's with the M1 and Magnum heads. Just imagine what that sucker would do with better heads and matching intake!
