Just seein what you all think:

Right now my 99 IB RC R/T has:

Mopar headers
catco
Gibson 3"
52 mm TB
180 stat
plugs,wires,cap n rotor
MP PCM
Roe racing controller
M1 2brl w/ sm. turtle
K&N
relocated IAT

Have in boxes but not installed:

2.02 ported,bronze guides (exhaust side)
220/230-.507/.507 ,114 cam
1.6 RR
roller lifters
pushrods
Mopar 2400 stall
caltracs
TransGo
MSD 6a

I wanna put 6-8 psi on that OR maybe 100 shot ,eventually. Looking for close to 400 rwhp./ mid-high 12s. And keepin it safe.

My question is---- As long as the heads , cam , intake , etc. is all coming off and the block is just sitting there , should I put in some good slugs and rods ?

The motor only has 12,400 mi now. Its not a daily driver. I like to take `er out on the weekends and like to go to the strip couple times a year.

I know if I get into the bottom end its gonna cost a small fortune. Any estimates ? (parts, labor , machining)

Or will it hold up (for a while) to what I wanna do ?

sry for long post,
thnx

If your goin for nitrous or boost definatley build up the bottom end. If you have the money, if I were you I'd yank the motor out and have it balanced and blueprinted if you do decide to build it up, balancing and blueprinting is the key to building it up the best and most people these days don't realize that it makes a big difference, instead they just swap em out and go on their way. If you could find someone that does that it'll be the best money you ever spent!

As long as your going to have the heads off, it would be a good idea to put in some heavy duty head gaskets and head studs too.

Are you still going to have it on the computer?because if not just go all out and put a good bottom end in it,like bearings and arp main studs but you could do that with it still being on the computer, how about a bigger cam and stall or bigger pistons sense your going to go though all the trouble of having the hole front and top of the motor off get some better heads than thoughs stock ones remember most of your hp is in your heads.Sorry but i have 2 old hotrods i'm just getting carried away alittle,i'm a mechanic too.Anyways good luck it should run real good.

do you guys think a steel crank is necessary????I am building a 408 and am debating between a forged and a cast crank. I tend to think that stronger is better, but do not know the limitations of the cast cranks.....a steel one is over 2 times the price of a new cast.....just a thought

Forged is best but not a necessity. You can take our cast cranks up to 500 hp safely.

not to change subjects, but my truck has the 44re with kevlar bands, HD clutches and transgo, will it handle the 408? maybe i should save the money on a cast crank and look for another tranny!!!!!

if you're looking for a shop in the chicagoland area to do machining, you could try Van Senus. it's in hessville, IN (it's right next to highland). probably only about a 30 minute drive from the city. i've heard excellent things about the work they do.

if you guys think that much extra power from a blower and a nitrus shot is gonna hold together with a stock bottom end, I gotta bridge in brooklyn,,,,,,, a 6-8 lb blower will streess your bottom end a lot. EVERY turbo engine built by a factory in the usa, dodge ford pontiac and buick ALL had forged steel bottoms and forged alum. pistons in them.then you wanna stuff another 100 from gas on top of that,,,,,, 6-8 lbs blower = 40-65% more hp. 250+125=375+100=475 hp on a bottom designed for 300 yeah right......

forged crank definatly..i am a hot rod builder and know. also why not put a bigger cam? mopar performance and a cam that you can get from summit with like 292 duration or something like that. build a thumper. and have your heads ported and polished. for pistons go for a low compression piston (8:5:1 if possible) using nitrous it is usually best to go with a lower compression that say you would building a all throttle no bottle engine. and get some good bearings and roller everything if budget allows...damn like i said i build rods and im getting carried away.

I would definately install some lightwieght forged pistons and balance the rotating assembly. Your lil 360 has some pretty beefy rods from the factory and for your application they should be more than adequate. All you need to do is fit them with some good rod bolts (ARP or MP), have them resized on the big end after you install the new bolts and magnifluxed to make sure they dont have any flaws. The lighter pistons will also be easier on your stock forged rods. Mopars have probably the strongest factory rods from the factory of the Big 3. Go find a rod from a 350 chevy and a 5.0 ford and compare them to your 360's rods and you'll clearly see what I'm talking about. I would only suggest H-beams for more than 6500 rpm.
