Alan was it very difficult to put a 318 in your dakota. I have a 89 Dakota Sport 4x4 5 speed and would like to drop one in some day soon hopefully if i can find one. What was the major things you had to change and what year of motor should I look for.

well it wasn't very hard to put in, it pretty much fit with ease, and there is still a little room to work with, the only thing that is the hardest to do is to change the #4 plug, i have to take the lower left engine mount loose and jack the engine off to one side to get in there. my 318 is a 90 that came out of a dodge caravan, i bought it from a buddy i used to work with and i took a trans that i found in a junk yard and rebuilt it, same as yours, a 5 speed, i had to chang the rear end, but i only have 2wd, i would love to make it a 4wd, but it costs so much, i need a front axle and the tran. i have plenty of suspension, i have a 6in. kit in my truck.i also have another 90 dakota that i am putting a 3.9 in with my old trans, a 5 speed, the only problem is that i can't find a computer and loom for it, i had given my loom and computer to a car recycling place to trade for my 318 loom and computer, do you know anyone that has a computer and loom laying around, i am willing to drive to get it or send cash to send it to me, can u help my out here?

I know of some guys that have attempted an engine swap. You will need to view this website and read the message board. Also, you might post a message there and someone will respond:

umm well alan.... a 6in lift on a gen1 4X4 is almost imposible unless u got a 4in suspension lift made for a 91-96 and a 2in body lift. or swapped in a solid axle. but on a 2wd..... no way in hell. the closest u can come is 2in spacers and a body lift!!! And another thing it is very hard to convert a 2wd gen.1 dakota to a 4x4.

1) they have a diffrent frame.
2) they have rack and pinion steering.

and another thing unless your referring to a full size van. they never had and never will have a v8 in a dodge minivan,
a 360 is the same size as a 318 just diffrent bore and stroke. Flat fender wells...attractive.

and i cant wait to see ur 6in. lifted 318 dakota 2wd. in the gallery WHOOPS my bad your.... 87 2WD WITH A 2.2 4 BANGER AND A 5 SPEED WITH UR BALD STREET TIRES. I BET IT REALLY EATS LOL. i recommend u not posting anymore messages on this site. we who know what wer talkin about dont have time to listen to a bunch of lies and dreams.

ok smart guy, i have a 6 in body lift on my truck, and what is ur point about rack and pinion steering, it all works, the steering was off for awhile but i know some people and they made some changes in the front suspension and i am just fine now,I DON'T HAVE 4WD, but i would like to make it 4wd, and the frame can be done to make the axle fit, you put a 4-6 suspension lift kit in and u have the frame cut and welded 2 in back and it fits just fine. yea i was referring to a full size van, i know that the caravan came with a 6 or a 4 in it,well sometimes u have to make changes with the fender wells, some times u don't, a big engine in a small truck doesn't exactly fit most of the time, sugest that u don't post anymore, just b/c u can't see it, don't mean u don't have to belive it, i am not saying u have to believe me, but when i get the pic in there, u will be sorry, an 87', i had 1, i put it in a ditch 1 nite, i didn't like that truck to much, and for ur info, it was a 6 cylinder, extended cab, long bed, AUTO, just b/c u can't afford to but a new truck, with your 87' 2wd 2.2 banger, and a 5 speed with bald street tires, what u can't afford to buy new tires? what do u eat? my dust!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i would love to make it a 4wd, but it costs so much, i need a front axle and the tran. i have plenty of suspension, i have a 6in. kit in my truck.

and how come they didnt modify the fender wells in the shelby huh?!?!?!

and the 318-360 is no wider then a 3.9 v6
and eat ur dust i think not u wanna know what i got..89 sport 4x4 3in body 2 in torsion bar lift.
NEW 33/12.50 sentry L/T's edelbrock headers and 13/4 in duals... so bring ur bad ass truck with ur 6in body lift. they didnt make an ext. cab in 87 and they never made one with a long bed.

I once saw a 426 Hemi bored to 500 in a two wheel drive toyota pickup. It was of course heavly modified and was probably just useing the box and body pannels but it was origanal dimesions. Is the 360 a small block based on the same block as the 318 or is it a different block design.

I can't believe that I am getting involved in this.... The 3.9l V6, 5.2l and 5.9L all have the same deck hight and 90deg. V angle. Therefore thay are all the exact same width. The all share the same transmission bellhousing and starter configurations so they are easy swaps.
Big blocks have two different deck heights and are known as B and RB engines. The most popular B engine is the 383. The most popular RB engines are the 426 Hemi and 440. That is it. 3 V-8 engine sizes in Mopars.
Pre magnum 318's and 360's do not share heads/intakes like the post '91 magnums. Balancing is also done differently between the two engines, but almost every external dimension is the same. (except for some oil pan applications)

WOW..this is entertaining
Okay as i have mentioned in a couple other posts, i have an 88 dodge dakota with a mild 79 360 w/A727 8 3/4 w/3.91s and posi. I believe the 8 3/4 is out of a c body mopar...not quite sure on that. The mounts were fabricated by a local chassis builder, but supposedly 3.9 mounts will work..however mine was a 2.2. Yes shelbys have dual electric fans....but yes a flex fan can fit with a 3.9 radiator, i know this cause i have one out in my garage with this. I used the same 4cyl crossmember with the a727 and only had to make a slight dimple in the firewall for the distributor and one dimple in the header tubes out of summit for the steering. it has the truck oil pan from a 79 dodge 360 crewcab. i was told that it wouldnt fit by a dodge tech. person @ a dealership...but what do you know it does. if someone can help me i will try to send the few pics i do have of the truck and install. my email address in wldtm@hotmail.com .....oh yeah and it runs 12.35 at 105 on the bottle w/slicks!!!

I'm in the process of dropping a '92 5.2 from a Ram into my '90 Dakota . The engine fits but i needed to change the oil pan to a '92 Dakota . I am having problems finding a lower rad hose . The Shelby hose does not fit around the neck of the '92 water pump . I am also looking for a harness and computer . The flexplate/torque converter needed to be swapped to mate to the engine and trans. A local transmission shop took care of that for me . After this I'm off to work on the fuel system .

I am in the process of putting a '87 360/904 combo in a '93 dakota chasis. It is part of a street rod so fenders etc. are of no concern.
the only problem I have encountered are engine mounts which I decided to fabricate. If I had to do it over I would use a newer magnum engine which is basically a drop-in.
