Subject: Intake Question

Message:
Proud Dakota Owners,

I have read numerous posts concerning home-brew air intakes, however, most of these are from over a year ago, and I'd like to know what experience everyone has aquired since then.

I would like to build my intake, and I have the 5.2 in a genIII, so unfortunately, my TB points straight up. Any suggestions on what I can do to replace the stock air hat?

Thanks all for your suggestions, sorry for posting on a worn out subject. Just wondering what a year of experience may have done for the subject.

Ryan

Hi, i'm in the same boat as you.

I've got a 98 3.9 v6 and mine points straight up also. I'm just going to use the stock air hat and connect a 3" rubber connector to it. Then so on and so on.

I went with the 360airtakez.com. I didnt like the looks of it at all or the way it fit. I ended up shaving nearly an inch off the top of the heat shield and relocated the bracket from below the filter to the back of the shield. Then we sandblasted the silver off of it and coated it w/ spray on bedliner. I love it though! Here are some pics...

I'm very happy with my intake, I built it a while ago during the summer and have so far had absolutely no problems with it. Right now I'm working on a more "aesthetically pleasing" design that won't look like a sewer pipe...
I installed a home made insulated heat shield yesterday and it seems to be working quite well, the insulated side close to the engine is hot while the inner side of the heat shield, as well as the filter itself, is ice cold! Very happy with it. I'll post pics once I gat my digital camera back.

This pic still has my old heat shield...

Thanks for the replys!

Darcy...looks like you have the 4.7, or a different intake...the problem I'm running into is the throttle body pointing straight up rather than being angled like yours.

Robbie...if I could afford the 360airintakez design, I'd jump on it, but as I'm getting married in June, 185 bucks does not seem like a great price.

I'd like to eliminate the stock air hat if possible, since I've heard it's restrictive and causes unwanted air turbulance. Any other suggestions? I'm probably just going to tear the thing apart and start experiementing, but I was hoping someone with the same engine setup had already done some of the legwork! ;)

If I come up with something unique I'll post some pics...thanks for the help gang!

Changing the stock air hat will not accomplish that much if any performance difference. The stock hat already flows enough cfm for this engine. Plus there is really nothing in the air hat the will cause turbulence. It's what's on the TB that will cause turbulence and restrictions.
Check out http://www.TheFastMan.com

My truck is currently a 2000 Dakota CC R/T. At first I ran only the 360 Air Intakez system with the stock air hat. I didn't have to modify any thing with the air intake and it installed in less then 10 minutes. My last dyno run was at 221 rwhp with the intake alone. That was a 18.3 rwhp increase over stock. I have recently added the following.. Custom cat-back exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler, Gibson Headers, and Mopar PCM.

I'm going to be doing a dyno run on my truck with these new mods this week. Before I but the M-1, & Roller Rockers on. So you can see that changing the air hat is not necessary. The guy that owns the dyno machine here in Vegas has a turbo charged 5.9L Ram. The Turbo Tronics air hat for it has a 3" inlet and that truck smokes A$$..

You said that 360 intake @ $185 does not seem like a great price! Yes if you compare it to a cheep ugly sewer pipe. But if you compare it to K&N, Volant, etc it's at a good price for the same quality and performance gain. I have tried them all, even the sewer pipe route which looked like crap. But that's my opinon!

Happy New Year Everyone!

I agree with the "looks" issue, but is there really a big difference in performance between a sewer pipe and the high priced stuff? My sewer pipe has not been dyno'd but I can feel the extra punch off the line....just waiting to see the mpg calcs. I'm not one to stop at the light and lift the hood, so as long it works for you, use whatever there is out there.......best bang for the buck so to speak. Just my .02. BTW, we're all waiting to see "Nitrousteve's" new 4.7 tube and how it looks (and how much!) :)

Have you Dodge guys ever done a search on the web for homebrew intakes? If you haven't, try it and you will finally notice how "CHEEP" you people really are. Get a life and buy a Ford Lightning! My bad, you can't even afford a dissent name brand air intake system for your ride. Ha Ha

I paid $125 for my Intense Performance Stage 2 intake. I ordered it direct from their website at www.intenseperformance.com. Quality is 2nd to none...it came with a polished, ceramic coated tube and a 7" Powerstack S&B filter. They have a choice of filter and coupler colors.

Mr. D.E...I looked at Fords before I decided to buy my Dodge truck. They sort of reminded me of the shape that a cowpie has when it hits the ground and goes SPLAT!...they have to be the ugliest pickup of all of the American makes. I also didn't like the looks of the interior...all of those bulges and curves reminded me of what that guy in that movie, "Elephant Man" looked like...YEWWWWW!! Oh, and just so you'll be educated the next time you make some dumb post on someone else's board, it's spelled CHEAP, not CHEEP, and DISSENT is something that you do when you don't agree with someone...DECENT is something of sufficient quality or behavior, which yours is not...

Dakota Eater,

When you're done eating that Dakota, could you send me some cash? You must be made of it.

For those of us who don't have a money tree, I'll take the best bang for the buck I can get.

Also, there's something about making something yourself. Sure, I could drop a couple Benjamins and say, "Hey, look at the intake I bought", or I could say open the hood and say, "Hey, look at the intake I made."

Modifying a vehicle is about personalizing...any idiot can go to a lot, drop a load, and drive away in a fast vehicle. It takes some brains and ingenuity to modify a vehicle and to build something with your own hands.

It also takes some brains to spell correctly when posting ridiculous comments on a dodge website.

I have a 97' with a 5.2 and I just removed the stock airbox but left the hat and rubber angle part. Then I bought a piece of 3" exhaust pipe about 20" long and a cone filter. If you look at the passenger side of the engine bay you'll see a hole almost big enough for the filter to fit in. I took some snips and cut a little and put the filter in this opening. Then I cut the piece of rubber next to the headlight. Air come right around the headlight and into this area and bam. I need to get some pics of it.
