Subject: Ran 9.85 in 1/8 w/ 4:56 gears in my 4.7?
IP: Logged

Message:
Today my best run was a 9.84 in the 1/8 mile with my 4:56 gears installed, I ran that with my 3:55 gear, but it only happed one time. With the 4:56s it was easy to hit 9.8 every time, launching at 1700 rpms, with tire spin. I can tell a difference from the 3:55s to the 4:56s, but what the hell. Can someone help me, I would like to be down in the 9.5-9.4 range. Or am I just doing something wrong?

01;QC;4.7;auto
4:56;4"intake;70mm TB
3rd cat removed;headers
flowmaster;IAT;tps .95
HO cams

And I let some tire pressure out to help me out didnt do much. What do you suggest? traction bars, more mods, but I ran the 9.8 before with only my air intake, 3:55 gears, and flomaster exhaust and then I put on all of the other stuff to get the same time.

Yes - The PCM should be everyones FIRST mod. I bett you would be .5 seconds faster if you had done the PCM. Also - get rid of those stock 2" down pipes.

Do you now have to shift into a higher gear befor completeing the 1/8th mile then you did with the 3.55s? If so that's probably eating up your gains, and I bet a full 1/4 mile run whould show an improvment. Otherwise it's probably just a matter of track conditions and weather changes.

Put some 28x11.5/15 slicks on it and get the computer flashed and the times should drop quite a bit.

My friends little brother has an '02 Reg cab 4.7 auto running 8.80's@83mph in the 1/8 with 4.56's , 28x11.5's , Cal-Tracks , Z tube , HO cams , Mike Leach flash on the comp , 3" single with no 3rd cat and a Dumped Dynomax Race magnum , no sway bars or spare. It 60's in the 1.80 range.

His started off running 9.90's@71 when it was stock the flash alone knocked it into the 9.40's with the 3.55's still in it.

I'm in the same boat with my '99 Dakota -Club Cab 318/A500/3.55 - ran a 9.68@74 with a 2.4? 60' last week - I need a PCM , 4.56's and some slicks and this thing should respond pretty well.

How do I get ahold of Mike Leach, so that he could flash mine also, and how much does it cost, and turn around time?

Thanx, Justin

A lot, being as it's a twin screw design. Need some slicks if you're gunna go for that.

Yes I can help. I've written this before. I used to race a streetable 10 sec. stang and can tell you that gears alone in most cases do not help you time and/or mph in the quarter. It's a combination thing and sometimes gears alone will hurt your time. Think about it....you're not adding more power so your mph, again in most cases will not change and sometimes your times will be hurt due to a loss of traction.

I wouldn't suggest doing too many runs with slicks on and clutch drops, you'll start breaking parts just like some other 4.7L 5-speed owners have done. The 4:56 gears plus a clutch drop with good bite from the slicks can really put some stress on the drivetrain.

Justin,

It's like lello said, you didn't add ANY power at the crank, you just shift sooner with the different gear ratio. Butt dyno may feel gains, but at the crank-nadda
