Looking for info on (functional)ram air hoods.I saw the aar hood on krcperformance.com,but its unclear to me what that setup would cost, what it looks like on the outside, and if the hood comes painted,or ready to paint. Also, the claim is 30 to 35 rear horse, true?I'm looking for a good looking hood, with the best possible performance gain.thanks,Todd

Todd,
What year is your truck?

I "THINK" that the hood most likely comes unpainted, but probably ready to paint!
As for performance gains... A "Ram Air" hood isn't going to be that "seat-of-the-pants" gain you're hoping for. From what I've read anyway.
Many of the guys on this board have explained the theory of "Ram Air".. Hopefully one of them will see this and explain it for you/us.
Sorry I couldn't be more help!

I say, buy the one that you think looks the best! I don't think performance plays a big enough factor... Anyone know different?

The only way to really gain any horsepower by switching to a "Ram Air" hood is by removing the restrictive stock intake and replacing it with something better. Hoods such as the Shaker, Premier Automotive's GTS Hood, Suncoast Creations, etc. all have ways to get the air into the engine more efficiently than the standard air box. You're looking at a 10-15hp gain with this swap.

If you've already got an aftermarket K&N air intake in your truck, the difference won't be as dramatic. The small bonus of having a Ram Air hood is colder air and a better incoming stream, but it won't give but a few more ponies to the mix.

My opinion is that you should pick a hood based on how you like the way it looks before comparing the 1-5hp difference between them.

Thanks for the info guys,my truck is a 99 RT,rc.,with no mods at all, yet. The main reason I was looking into a hood, was partly for appearance, and partly because I was under the impression that it would be a better gain over just a cold air intake.I have around 1000.00,give or take,to part with in January, and I'm trying to line up the best, initial mods for the truck.Any suggestions would be appreciated.Hearing more and more about the mopar performance pcm also.thanks,Todd

I have one from suncoast creations, a functional ram air hood, It looks real bad @ss and there is a slight difference in performance but thats at 60+ mph. The great thing is the engine runs much cooler and thats noticible at the gauge, oh and it does need to be painted almost all also need to be shaved and fitted corectly, i have never seen one that bolts right on that evenly matches up.

Personally I like and have Premeir Automotive's GTS hood. It looks really good and the NACA scoop is located at the front of the hood and works awesome.

I ordered this hood for my '95. It hasn't come in yet. It's a Profinish and it is functional.

the only hoods ive delt with was on my camaro which was a ram air hood that was raised into a cowl, very awsome hood if i might add. the hood was from factory sports car and was all fiberglass and was "ready to paint" well after close inspection the hood was ready to paint but needed block sanded due to ribbles in the fiberglass that would surly show after painted, the hood ran 450.00 the paint job ran another 425.00, as far as ram air goes ur only lookin at a 15-20 hp gain (note: your tranny takes aprox. 30% of all hp made from the engine to transform it to power to the ground) right now i have a 03 that id like a shaker hood for because it looks good but ill probly end up putting on a K&N aircharger for performance,(also i still have a full warrenty) if you want performance add a charger or a stroker kit dont screw away your money and time with evey lil bolt on u can find. im doing the k&N because of my truck only having 100 miles on it and still containing the full factory warrenty, its your money you put it where you want it to go!

Todd: For $1k and having no mods, your best bet is to get a Mopar PCM, K&N Intake, and a better throttle body.

Steve,With the F&B TB's,there are numerous sizes, what is the difference?I imagine larger=more flow, but is there any size in particular that is optimum? Also, how much is involved with the install? The Fastman products look to be a better deal, would those products yeild the same type of gain as the F&B?Thanks alot for the help. When I started researching my first mods,I wanted to do the throttle body, cold air intake, and mopar perf.pcm.I also thought about the exhaust, but I cant see ripping off a perfectly good system.I think maybe just the muffler until the time comes for headers and cat back.Anyway,I appreciate all the info,Todd

I can't answer that one for 100% certainty (yet) since I've only experienced the Fastman 51.75mm throttle body first-hand. I definitely noticed the difference in power when I installed it.

According to data posted on the web and feedback by a number of people who own them, the 50mm F&B outperformed the 51.75mm Fastman.

I am hoping to test out a F&B throttle body soon so I can accurately give feedback on both. From what I can tell, if you've got the money get the F&B, if you're on a tight budget look at the Fastman.

I bought an AAR ram air hood for my truck three years ago, it comes unpainted, but is fully prepared for painting. it costs about 450, as for the ram air you have to shell out another 150-200 for the ramair box, on wet or cold days I can tell a difference but, if I was to do it over again I would buy a supercharger instead of the hood hope this helps
