 Subject: Air intake question

I was looking under the hood of my 93 4x4 Dakota w/318 and was wondering if I made my own intake tube that runs from the back side of the grill to the air cleaner housing with smooth tubing of the same or slightly larger diameter and instead of having the turn in the tube, I made it a straight tube. Would this give me much more air flow any any difference in performance? If anyone has done this i would like some tips and results.
