I was planning on building my cold air intake this weekend, but latley I've been hearing really bad things about K&N Filters. Such as how they do a horrible job filtering out dirt and there are better filters out there that have much better flow. What do you guys think? Anyone had any luck w/ the Intense Performance filters?

Thanks.

Basically, all of the cloth type filters are the same. What you have been hearing is that oiled-foam filters do a much better job filtering out dirt. This is true, and this info has been used to bash manufacturer's like K&N. However, The cloth type filters are not bad, especially for street driving. If you are running around in desert sand, and always swallowing dust and dirt, I would be a little concerned about air filtration. For normal on-street use, any of the cloth filters will be fine as long as you keep them oiled. That includes filters like K&N, Green, Intense Performance (I can't remember who manufactures the filters they sell), etc.

As proof of this, I have had several ATV's over the years, which come from the factory with oiled-foam air filters, and I always ran K&N filters. You can only imagine how much dirt was swallowed up running dirt roads, woods trails, etc. I never had any engine problems from dirt getting in the intake. So I do not feel that using the K&N type filter is ever going to damage a street type engine. My Dakota has 70,000 miles, and it runs like new (actually a lot better, but thats another topic.) I have had a K&N or Green filter on it since it was 1 month old.

I run the AMSOIL TS-29 Dual Stage Foam Air Filter and it will trap a heck of a lot more dust and dirt than the K&N Plus ..... It woke up that 4.7 a lot too !

To each his own though !

Thanks for the reply Lattimer!

Dr D... I looked @ the Amsoil but I couldnt find anything that would go along w/ a cold air intake... all i saw was the filter for stock air boxes. To your knowledge, do they make anything like the 7" K&N's?

Ok great... let me ask another question then...

I am either going to get the Intense Performance Stage III intake, or the 360airintake. It looks like that the only difference is that the Intense intake has the filter enclosed in a canister and the 360 only has a heat shield. Which would be better? It seems that the Intense would pull colder air because you could direct it from, say the passenger fender... but would the 360 pull more air since it isnt restricted to what a 4" tube pulls in?

I don't have experience with either intake, but from what I've heard around the boards, the intense performance intake is the better way to go.

And Dr. D is correct, that foam filter will trap more dirt than ANY oiled cloth filter (K&N, etc.).

I just feel the cloth filter is adequate for street use.

I like the Amsoil air filters for the drop in applications (modified / stock air box) but when I do run the cotton / gauze conical style filters I just buy a 99 cent pair of cheap ladies stockings ( no laughing please ) and slip one of them over the filter, and then when I am at a show I remove it.

P.S.

To answer R's question I do not think that Amsoil offers a large clamp on style foam filter but I do know that UNI does.

Dr. D...what do you do with the other half of those ladies' stockings? :-) No modeling in front of the mirror, hehehe...j/k...

Intense Performance filters are made by S&B...supposed to be superior in some slight way to K&N, but who knows? I have an Intense Stage 2 intake with the 7" Power Stack filter...it's got a small indented cone filter on the front of it, rather than just a flat cap. They say it increases the flow area and causes less turbulence along the sides of the filter, so more air gets in there, too. I do know that the intake itself is very high quality...ceramic coated tube, looks very good.
