I was wondering if there was a manifold out there I could swap onto my 99 5.2 for better performance. I really dont have $3-500 for headers right now. Maybe a manifold that is worth doing some port and polishung to.

The exhaust manifolds from a '92 or early '93 will gain you about 7-10 hp , they are a bit bigger. If you go looking for a set in a junk yard just take a good look at yours and they will not look the same, can't remember what the change was but they are easy to tell apart.

JC Whitney has Pace Setter headers for about $100 on sale for the 5.2. They work well on my '95 5.2, they fit without hassles, and at least feel like they increase HP and TQ moderately.

On the 92-3 exaust manifold should I use the 5.2 or 5.9 manifold.

On the Pace Setter headers, do they carry a C.A.R.B. #

The exhaust manifolds you would be looking for would be from a 92 or 93 Dakota with a 5.2 ( the 5.9 didn't make it into a stock dakota until the 1998 R/T) .These early manifolds would help a R/T as well. If you find a set I don,t think the price will be over $100 and they don't need a gasket ( Dodge doesn't use one)but it is not a bad idea to use one .If you decide to unbolt the manifolds it is alot easier to pull the tire and remove the plastic inner fenders, removing the bolts from the under side is a pain in the @$$!! The Pace Setter headers have a carb # but the '97-'99 Dakota headers only come in ceramic coated $299.95.

G.R. My JBA shorty headers made lots more midrange power ,(the butt dyno and the g-tech liked it),with a bit more on the bottom and top end.

for the same price as the pace setters $299 you could get a set of ceramic coated flow tech's from summit. i purchased the summit truck headers and they sent me pace setters. the pace setters had crappy welds and splatter on the tubes and flanges which were warped. i sent them back before i thought about installing them and went with the flow techs. i even got the flow tech's for $277 shipped

I ordered pace setters from jc whitney and they aren't coated. I bought these cause I plan on putting header wrap on them. They were $189 shipped and are of decent quality. Bolted on no problem the only thing I didn't like about them was the final bends where it meets the flange had some wrinkles in them. Hard to explain but it made them not round and reduced the overall opening size. Not sure if all are like this or just the pace setters as I haven't seen any others up close yet. There was a defenite improvement in performance over the manifold though.

Dana 360,

How do like your Flowtech headers? I was considering buying a set of these because the price is good.
I can't imagine spending $150-200 more on a set of headers if they'll only yield a couple more ponies.

I'm running a set of fairly uncommon headers on my '99 - the Edelbrocks - I like them , they are 409 stainless , 1 5/8" 4 into 1 with a 2 1/4 Y pipe , thick tubing , thick flat flanges and doughnut gaskets on the header flanges. Power has increased and they sound great - I paid about $350 from Summit - I was going to go with the MP's but couldn't see spending $480+ for them.

Just my opinion;

With headers it is a " you get what you pay for " thing . Cheap headers tend to be just that , bad seals , rust , cracks ,leaks , non emissions legal , bad gaskets , non equal length , thin wall and plates , bad fit and low power gains are some of the down sides to some "cheap" headers. On the 5.2 and 5.9 ,headers are a mod you should do after you have done mods to the intake system and at that point you already have alot of $$$ in the truck and probably want to keep it for awhile. Just my opinion but this is a bad place to save a few bucks.
FYI I got the JBA SS headers for my '97 5.2 from speedtweaks about 2 years ago for $299.00

P.S. www.truckperformance.com has Gibson Shorty Smog Legal,14 Gauge Nickel-Chrome Plated Steel Headers on sale for only $263.88!!

Hey Dak,
I have exhaust manifolds from a '93 5.2l Dakota. They have about 18,000 miles and are in excellent condition. I do not have the truck anymore. I installed MP headers at 18,000 mi, then a few years after, I was t-boned and the truck was totaled by the other guys ins. company. I do have the origianl exhaust manifolds however. If you are interested, send me an email.
