I drove the hell out of that truck. It took me from Atlanta to Raliegh more times than I can remember....

went from Atlanta to Seattle and back and it was not in a straight line....

went to the drag strip almost every week of racing season from 1996 to 2000.....

I worked under the hood, under the frame, under the fenders, all over the damn place.....

Of course, now that my new ride is poised to hit 14-0's on the motor (maybe 13.9's), I am not so sad about my old truck. heeheeeheee.... Guess my new girl is growing on me.

Well .alex., I have several options to go with right now. I have a spare Magnum 318 that I bought from my father-in-law, or I have a 340 and a 727, or I've even thought about putting the Mopar Performance 402 stroker in it and putting a big fat carb on it. So, as you can see, I'm weighing my options, but with the release of the Hemi in the Ram, I'm thinking of trading the '98 Dakota in on that.

So if that goes down to my liking, then I may just run the 318 that I have in in for now and just "tweak this and tweak that." Personally, I think that I have an 8-second pass (1/8th mile) in it...high, high 8's that is, but I will have to wait till next season...we'll see.

I'd say a carbed 402 truck would make a hell of an 11-sec wheels-up ride. Not too good for the streets (okay, maybe on Saturday nite) but that way if you do get the Ram, you can sell the thing as a full-on race truck. I think that'd bring more $$$ than a "project in the works."

What's the rear suspension? Just the narrowed 8.75? I forget if there were ladder bars/coils, etc.....

Actually, that's what I'm thinking about doing. It's one price for everything that I want: stroker crank, big valve R/T heads, 4bbl M-1, and proven 435 horsepower. All I need is the fuel system (fuel cell at home waiting to be installed), carb, better headers, R/T oil pan and pick-up, and gutting the fuel injection/computer. Kind of an intense install, but if my buddy and I can set up the 4-link; I think we can set the engine in and make it run.

My rear set-up is a Chassis Engineering 4-link (not to be confused with Chassis Tech; this is a good kit...not junk), and coil overs. The rear is an 8.75 Chysler with an Auburn Pro/4:86 gears. For just a "bolt-on" 318, it still pulls like a MO FO. The M-1/Mopar Convertor was the best investment I've made.

This was the most fun I've had building a truck, and the "pay-off" at the track was well worth every penny I spent.

CASDAK look at Jason Hammond's truck on dragtruk.com (up in the 11.6-sec range). He showed me better headers. Doug Thorley long-tubes that fit the passenger side but had to be cut & welded on the drivers side to clear the steering column. He got 'em Jet Hot coated with platinum colored finish. Made a nice look against the Intense Blue paint. Apparently they fit better and make more power than any others. I think they have the longest tube before the collectors.... torque, torque, torque! hahahaha

You should e-mail him. He's very knowlegeable and willing to help out.

Well that would be nice...but I'm more for cost effective, especially if I go with a new Ram as my daily transportation.

With the 402 it's already built, and I don't have to mix and match parts. Okay, so I'm lazy, but you see what I'm getting at right? There are several cam/head combinations that can make serious power or serious problems.

I bought the 340 from a guy that had the engine in a barn. He said that he had been putting oil down in the cylinders, but once I pulled the heads...I didn't like what I saw. So as of right now, I don't know if the block is good or not. If I get the notion, I'll send it to the machine shop were my buddy works, and have it hot-tanked and checked.

Thanks .alex. I appreciate the help on the headers. Yeah Jason's truck is one nice ride, in fact I first saw his truck while I was putting mine together, and thought, "Hey that's whay I'm trying to accomplish."

Right now I'm running JBA shorties, which for the 318 is plenty. Though, if I run the 402 I'll definitely need long tube headers.

Alex, any more info on those long tube headers? I have asked all over these boards for any info on what long tube headers would fit a 99 with a 5.9 even with some adjusting or cuting and welding. I would DIE for a set of LONG TUBE HEADERS....(in Homer Simpson's voice)...uuuhhhggg heeeaaaddders....
Seriously if anyone stumbles across this and has a recommendation please let me know. Thank you.

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that long-tubes for a Gen III truck are either going to be a hand-built deal, or you'll have to hack up the truck to get them to fit. Things are pretty damn tight between the brake booster, the firewall, and the back of the head on the driver's side. On the passenger's side, you might could pull it off, but again, it would be tight. And then you've got to create a custom y-pipe, prolly. The easiest way I cna see is to buy a set that fits the 318/360 in a Gen II truck and then figure out WHY they won't work on a GEn III truck. If you can modify them for cheap, then go for it. If you can't then send them back..... Sounds complicated, but somebody has to go first.

There are a few Chevy and Ford owners on Dragtruk who are lying! Some Ex Cab Silverado is caming something like a 14.7 with almost no mods! Bull! A couple trucks up from that post in the 14.4 range, is a supercharged single cab Silverado with lots of mods. hmmmm There was also a 4.6 Ford long bed running a 15.1 with no mods. Bullshi*! Hell, I saw a GT stang run a 14.8 with slicks and a few bolt-ons. They are either lying about there mods or they never ran those times.

The dumbest one was a newer s-10 (i think) running 1.6 60 foot with street tires. What an idiot! I'm not saying some Dodge owners haven't posted questionable times, but the Chevy and Ford times were posted by retards!

CASDAK,

I saw your question on drag truck about your 1/8 mile time vs. your mph. The reason I see is that you have a lot of gearing in your truck. It looks like you have it geared for a motor that peaks at 7grand. I think once you get heads and a cam you should be able to pull the 2nd half of the 1/4 better(greater increase in 1/4 vs.1/8 mile mph). If your thinking about putting a bigger motor in it I would definitely lower the gears ratio. At what rpm are you going through the lights? With the stock cam it shouldn't be much above 5000rpms to get the best time for your truck.

Nice truck and I can't wait see a new #'s on Drag truck.

I may have to be the test subject for the long tube header thing for gen III's. I think i am going to get a set of the tri-y's and see just why they wont fit. hell i may pick up a set of the older style headers used off ebay and givem a try. If i come up with something that works ill be sure to let everyone know. but i figure i can buy a set of long tube headers and have them customized for what the shorties cost as is.
We'll see anyway...wish me luck
