Subject: Just installed 4:56 in my 4.7 auto!
IP: Logged

Message:
I just finished it up 1:30 this morning, no leaks, or noise coming from the rear end. Sucks though, because I cant get on it just yet, have to wait for the gears to break in. Tach is @ 2000rpm's @ 50mph, and 2100 @ 55mph, and 2400rpm's @ 60mph. Just some true figures from a 4.7 auto. Can tell a difference in take off. Those 3:55's dont come close to these 4:56's. You'll be in O/D at 30 mph baby footing it.
But I have to say it gets up to speed quicker, and before you know it, you're doing 55 in a 35 unexpectivly??? did i spell that right? But anyways, I was scared too, at first when I ordered my gear, then I was like what the hell I'll give it a try, and I love it, do a lot of around town driving, some highway, and hardly any interstate driving. If you have any questions replie back.

NICE! I hope to get my set in another month or so. It's good that you aren't romping on it just yet. Be sure to change the oil in about 500 miles too. No questions, makes me want to get mine all the sooner. By the time I get them in there will probably be snow though. It'll be a while before I can use them to their fullest.

Yeah, I bet that is nice. Now, just get you some really low profile tires, with a height of about 16", and I bet your 0-60 time will be about 1 second... at least according to your speedo.

With those gears at 55mph, your speedo will read around 70.

Use
http://www.sgmotorsports.com/mph.htm
or
http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html

With the tire calculator, use Tire A 215/75 R 15 and Tire B 235/35 R 15

I've been wanting to get a set of 4.10s for front and rear, but the last time i checked, no one made a set for the front. Damn me for being a 4x4. :)

The 4.56s seem a little high for me, i do alot of driving at 70 Mph, so i thin the 4.10s will be about as tall as i go.

Cryppie ,The speedo will still be correct with the new gears - a few years back Dodge started running the speedo off the ring gear so you can change gears with no problem but if you change tire height you have to change it in the computer with a DRB at the dealer.

That is correct moparjoe20. The tranny will automaticly learn the new gear ratio, you're speed will be correct.
Jason I got my gears from Randy's ring and pinion
www.ring-pinion.com, cost of 4:56's are $214.00
$25.00 s/h. The 4:11's are the same. The make of the gears are Yukon, he said that is the best that they have, with no complaints. 2 different people looked, and figured it out for me. Their is only a 50-70rpm difference between the 4:11's and the 4:56's. So if you are looking at 4:11's, I think that you might wished that you would have gone with the 4:56 gear. Not unless you just have had you heart set on 4:11's. I just looked at it this way, I'am paying for something that I drive, why not drive something the way that you realy want it. Then if you are reading this post you are, or have been looking into getting a gear put in you're dak, soo, if you're going to tack up the rpm's 400-450 more over stock gears why not go ahead and do another 50rpm's more. Just something that I thought about. And if you're worried about wear and tear on you're motor, dont worry to much (I was too at first) Several people asked me "do you sevice your vehical?" such as oil change, tran fluid change, and gear oil, well if you do, like you are supposed too, their really should'nt be that big if a difference, but their is one thing that will GASmpg. But use top quality oils, and fluids, and you should be fine, remember it is all in the way you take care of it, and drive it.

Chris - on the 40 mph indicated vs. 38 mph radar:

Almost all manufacturers make their speedos read a little high from the factory. Car and Driver did an article about this a few months ago. American vehicles come the closest to being accurate, and the Germans are the worst. There is apparently a law in Germany that states that a speedo can NEVER read lower than the actual speed, even if the car owner puts monster tires on it.

Texaslawdawg, no Iam not a mechanic. I know one real well, so he came over to my place and did the install. Tearing it apart, and putting it back together is'nt so bad, it's the time that you have to fool around with it that is. If you know how to use a dial indicator, and set backlash, then you should be ok, but if you are in worried about it, I would'nt think twice on hiring somebody. A mechanic that has set so many ring and pinions in his lifetime that he can't remember the first one he ever did will most likely be your best. PS I have only put 80 miles on my truck since the install, still needs more milage, or break-in time before I can hammer down on it, "can't wait" . Oh and when you decide to install them, or get someone to, remember that their is a shim in between the bearing, and pinion teeth (on the pinion).

Break in time???

Oh My...I never did that...Just put 'em in and roll.

When I put 4:10's in my stang, I tested em out by doing a clutch drop in first, and running it wide open to 140mph.

Beat the crap out of them every day afterwards too. No problems...

Randy Pile has a group buy going on for Motive Gears right now that is just a steal. Note, this is only for the 9.25 axle. You should give him a call, it's an awesome deal on gears. Wont find another like it. There are actually around 13 for sures on that group buy and several more maybes. Motive is a good brand too. I believe it's GMs OEM gear company, but I might be mistaken.

D, yes their is a special tool, a dial indicator. It give you a estimate on how many more shims you might need or how many that you might need to remove, to get the correct depth or the pinion. The backlash is set by these threaded plates on both sides of the gear drive, (inside each end of the axle housing, so that shims are not needed).

I needed another special tool to turn the adjuster nuts through the axle tubes, so all I did was pullout an adjuster nut, find another nut (don't laugh about the nuts) that was close, rounded it off so it fit, then weld it to a small circumfrence pipe that was about 5 feet long, worked really nice for setting backlash, and cheap.

The 5 speed manual actually uses less of an overdrive then all automatics used in the Dakota. So adding 4.56 gears to an automatic is actually more forgiving on the highway then in a 5-speed, not buy much but it is certainly not any worse.

One more thing,,,,,I know that you're thinking man this guy doesnt sleep, well I work 3rd so I kind of cant sleep during the night, so Iam up all night long with my buddies, that all have mustangs, and we dick around on the town. Raced my brother and his 02 4.6 gt, and I jumped him of the line around a car length, and stayed their a whole 1/4 mile, no BS. And that was with my 3:55's, his is practicaly stock with a Basani X pipe w/ FMasters. But anyways as I were saying last night I wanted to see what it feels like starting in 1st, then shifting into 2nd, then o/d. I started to give it gas, not a lot, and after about 20-30 feet it was already tacked at 3500rpm's, so I eased off of the gas a little, then put it back up in the 3500 range, about snaped my buddies neck, he was a little tore up, so he was'nt ready for that, and from my point of it, their was already a big feel in the pants difference. Just wanted to let you know, so that I can make you even more pissed that you dont have your's yet, just picking, what are you waiting for get those 4:56's installed, you're holding back on the torque that youre truck has.

I am in a Motive Gear group buy right now. And so is another 15-17 people. The problem is they are backed up at the factory for them. Randy at Premeir Automotive was going to put an order in, but his sales person told him about that so he decided not to take everyones money for them yet. They should be ready to ship in another month last I heard.

My studs wouldn't be happy with the 4.56s right now anyhow.

Sorry for the questions but:

Where would my RPM's be at when going 70mph (stock rims and tires) with :

3.92's
and
4.10's

They seem pretty close,,and if it isn't much of a difference than I'll step up to the 4.10's. Putting in a limited slip as well. Currently running a 3.55 w/open from the factory.
