Subject: The 'Death Flash' ?
IP: Logged

Message:
The other day, I looked at my PCM (stock, no chips, etc) and noticed an upgrade sticker on it.

I NEVER had it at the dealer for any pinging issues (it never pings).

I've heard that when your truck is at the dealer for something else, and they hook up up to look for any codes, if there's an upgrade flash, you get it, and they don't even mention it.

Maybe CW, or another DC tech can help here.

I'm going to get the #'s off it today and ask CW what the upgrade was.

01, 4.7, 5spd, HOcams, homebrew intake, no belt clutch/fan, etc.

If it is coming in for something other than a pinging problem I will not flash them. I have in the past but that was to a really whiny customer that kept complaining about a drivavility problem. He got the flash to fix the minor drivavility problem but got the ping flash as well. I told him so. LOL

Usualy it is a plenum gasket if it is pinging.

Mine got it before I even bought it. Service manager there is somewhat of a fanatic. If an update comes out and there's stock on the lot they all get it. Pissed me off, didn't know until it was too late.

CW,

The sticker has alot of #'s and letters.

Here goes:as it looks as best as I can reproduce it here:

Authorized Software Update 56040

241AE
module p/n P5604024IAE
module s/n TEH318000BVD
Sequence# 475060

I'll wait for your reply, Thanks CW

And my real question is: can it be at least put back to stock timing?

I don't flash unless "the R/O" i'm given "tells" me to flash. I'm the fix it man/not the "do this" man. The way I see it, the flash is to solve the customers concerns, keep safety 100% for the vehicle (long story) and Fed, State, blah, blah, blah. My $.02. And no I'm not a DCC mouth piece.

if you get an aftermarket flash from, say, kenne bell, will the dealership flash over it when they have your truck?

do you need to specifically instruct them not to?

A Texas sized,

Thanks CW

Gald to hear that's not the death flash. I hate to lose a few HP, especially when I never have pinging. (once I did, got bad gas at a mom and pop station, never go there again, and never have a pinging anymore!)

More info for the cause:

1) MY99/00 PCMs are totally different than the MY01/02 units, at least as far as the pinout in concerned.
2) My part number ends in 351AB. Truck is a MY02/4.7/45RFE.

Looks like it's only for the 00/01 trucks.

It retards your timing so the pinging will disappear. Unfortunately, your power will disappear too.

Yep,

And from what CW says,

I don't have it! - yeah

Just have to make sure I never get it, I really like the power of my 01, QC, 4.7, 5spd, HO cams, etc. Play with cars and trucks all the time, I know there ARE things that will beat my QC, I just don't really see, or try and race with them I guess.

After reading this thread I checked my stickers. The dealer told me that a flash upgrade was done on my truck back in 2000 when I had it in for the pinging issue, but my numbers still have the AE version.

CW, do you think you can check mine out as well? I can't get a straight answer out of anyone here.

Upgrade sticker says:
P56040096AE
Seq# 220800

Original Motorola # is:

But getting that a/mkt flash is still a problem for some of us 02 owners. Depending on what happens in the next few months I may pursue a transplant (hence the schematics). Thanks as always!
