Alright here's the question. I'm doing an exhaust job on my 01 QC dakota 4.7 lt. I'm choosing between a flow master or a magna flow. Which would you guys recomend, and should I go with 2-1/2" or 3" pipe after the cat?

I just got magnaflow #14256. Its stainless. I haven't put it on yet. Hopefully next week. It's 2.5"in/out. I'm just gonna replace the stock muffler. I already have a 2.5" in/out carsound cat so hopefully the two will compliment each other. Flowmasters are much louder then magnaflows and you don't have a stainless steel option. I go for power not sound. From what "most" not all people have said that they get just sound from a flowmaster. Bernd at speedtweaks.com told me to go with just the stock piping if i'm not going to go with forced induction. I have a '00 4.7L so I only have a single cat-converter. I'm going to look into a custom y-pipe to further open up the exhaust.

Thats just my setup. Other people have had luck with other setups. Do some research and talk to a few "experts" who really know 4.7L's. If you just want loud though get the flowmaster.

If your engine is basically stock, I would definitely go with the 2.5". Otherwise you will lose too much low end. When I first got my catback I lost ALL low end power without gaining anything anywhere. It took my pcm a few tanks of gas to relearn I guess because it improved later but it still lost some low end. With a s/c you can afford to lose a little low end. But stock, no way.

I had a flowmaster and hated it, got a magnaflow a love it. The flowmaster sounds cool, and aggresive but gets annoying on the road real quick.

When I replaced just the muffler on my 4.7 with a 50 series FM, I didn't notice any performance diff. and the sound was just about the same as stock ; very dissapointing. I then decided to go with no muffler at all (I have three cats-02') and had some pipe bent from the main cat. over the frame rail and dumped out the side before the rear wheel. I still haven't noticed any performance gains, but I always get compliments on how the truck sounds. Good luck with your decision.

stainless...magnaflow.

flowmaster bad seams, poor quality. mine
busted in less than 10,000. they love to rust,
and sound like sh!t on the 4.7's. the
magnaflow has a much deeper tone, the
flowmaster is raspy.

Get the Magnaflow, Flowmasters are junk...they only sound good (if that) do nothing for Hp gains.

Thanks for the advice. Guess I'm going with the magnaflow. Hey, the magnafow sounds a little better in the performance depatment, but does it sound good. What I mean is will it sound like I've changed the muffler out. The performance is my main concern, but I do want to hear that I've done something. Also, I'm putting a cold air intake on, so will that justify the 3" pipe ordo I just stick with the 2.5"? The cold air intake is just to hold me over till get a functional ram air hood at the end of next year.

You'll definitely hear the Magnaflow. I had a #14256 on my V6, but I took it off after a couple of weeks. I don't care what anyone says, there isn't a muffler manufactured that'll make a V6 sound good at all RPM's. At idle, it sounded very good, almost like a V8...but, at about 2000rpm, it sounded just like a ricer. With a V8, though, it'd be like Mozart to the ears. Not too loud, and not too quiet. I put on a Super Turbo in its place, which is nowhere near the same quality as the Magnaflow, but it's a little quieter, which is better for me. I'm still looking for something even quieter. If I had a V8, the Magnaflow would still be on there, rather than sitting in its box in my garage.

I have the 5.9 and just had a MagnaFlow put on it about a month ago. A guy down at the Meineke had a flowmaster on a 5.9 and yeah it turned some heads, but it was much more annoying than it was impressive. I love my MagnaFlow and they come with a lifetime warrenty... so that's a plus.

I am also looking into a new muffler. I have a Flowmaster DeltaFlow 40 series on my Cherokee and know what the range of sound it has. IMO, I like it. But Magnaflow or Flowmaster aside. I was wondering if, when installed. Will it start hanging a bit? Cause I noticed on my Cherokee. It reduced ground clearance a bit due to it's size. Does magnaflow do that?

Just got the magnaflow put on Friday afternoon. It sounds great! It's a little loud inside the cab because I got turn downs right behind the muffler. Really glad I didn't get the flowmaster, I think it would have been to loud for me. Gonna loose the third cat next. Just gotta find someone who'll cut it off and slide some tubing through it then hang it back up. Bypass it internally so it still looks as though I have a fuctional cat to the vehicle inspection man.

I had a flowmaster 40 series 2 chamber which is louder than the delta flow and I thought it was too quiet. Thats when the custom made duals came in with glasspacks.

I had a magna flow on my 350 Chevy half ton before I sold it...I thought it sounded pretty good but I really like my Flowmaster. I have a 40 series non-Delta flow on my R/T. I think it sounds great with my headers and supercharger. I like setting off alarms.

I don't know what you all did to your Flowmasters (or who put them on), but I haven't had a bit of trouble with my 50 series. Nice mellow burble, very slight improvement in gas mileage, but you can't expect a simple muffler swap to add that much power by itself.

Well when I was at the shop the guy slapped a couple different mufflers on to see what they sounded like including a flowmaster 40 and it was deeper sounding but loud. I went with the Magna because of the straight threw design.
Sure made a performance difference.

In the cab it kinda sounds like a Ninja MC when ya wind it out though.

Anyone think a resonator tip would help, hurt, no dif?

BTW I'm old enough to remember what my '64 Sedan De Ville sounded like without a muffler.
