I own a Durango, is that ok with you guys?

I am going to put an exhaust on my 99 5.9L 4x4 Durango. Now I have done a lot of research on this matter. I have narrowed my choices to the Dynomax Ultra-Flo, or the Super Turbo. I want to go with the Ultra-flo because of the increased performance over the Super-Turbo. However, I think it may too loud inside the truck. Which brings me to the Super-Turbo. I think it may be too quiet. Does anyone have experience with these mufflers? And please don't say go with flowmaster. I've had a few FM's and I don't like them anymore.

I value this sites opinions, Thanks.

I could be wrong about this. I think the ultra-flo is quieter than the super turbo. I think the ultra-flo mufflers have more packing inside for better sound assorbtion. The ultra-flo is a straight through design while the super turbo uses flow directors in a S pattern. Check with the Dynomax site. They have a sample of cars with their mufflers for sound comparisons.

Sean - I just put a Dynomax Super Turbo on my 02 QC, 4.7, auto. I went through much the same dilema you are going through. I want to hear it when I get on it, but don't want a lot of noise when cruising doen the road. Here's my impression of the Dynomax Super Turbo from inside the truck:

At idle - nice throaty rumble
Part throttle acceleration - probably when it is the loudest (but not obnoxious), especially between 1500-2000 RPM. You'll know it's there, but can still talk to passengers without yelling.
Full throttle acceleration - quiter than I expected. I'm a little disappointed with the sound here. Maybe it sounds better from the outside.
60 MPH cruise - slight roar noticable. Slightly louder than stock.
70 MPH cruise - hardly know it's there.

My exhaust is otherwise completely stock. I can't say that I've noticed a big performance difference, but my "butt dyno" would probably have a hard time picking a HP gain of less than 10 HP. Based on my research, I ranked the Dynomax Super Turbo as the quietest, followed by the Magnaflow, followed by the Dynomax Ultra-flow. Your ears and vehicle may have different results. I would think that the Durango would be a little more susceptable to interior "droaning" from an exhaust system.

Hope this helps.

The Super Turbo is by far the quietest of the bunch. BUT-- the performance is definately there... The trick-- flange out your CAT 3" on the backside, use 3" the whole way... If you can swing it-- have the pipe from the Y-pipe to the cat opened up to 3"-- I ran this setup on my '95, with the Super Turbo-- Sounded mellow inside, growled outside-- and the horsepower/Torque did MUCH better than stock.

I put the super turbo on my Trans Am. I wanted performance but my wife didn't want too much noise. Exocet's description pretty much fits my car too. I have 2 chamber flowmaster dumped on my Dakota. It is loud but that's the way I like it. I'd run open headers if I could.

Very excellent postings. Thanks for the input. I am still conflicted. The problem is that we all have a different opinion of too loud. If you asked me when I was 18 I would tell you mufflers are for girls. I think I am leaning towards to Super Turbo. A proven muffler, cheaper, and I'm thinking if I dont like it I'll sell it on ebay and buy a u-flo. Solid, informative post Exocet, that helped. Keep the opinions and experiences coming. Thanks!!

A few months ago my local muffler shop told me that they couldn't get Dynomax mufflers any more. They said that Walker(owner of Dynomax) was out of business or sold out to someone else. They weren't doing business under that name any more. I went to a second place that said the same thing but their supplier still had what I wanted in stock. Is it true that Walker is out of business or belongs to someone else? If they were bought out then who owns them?

Thanks,

I have the Ultra Flo on my 4.7L. At idle you hear a low growl (not real loud but sounds good). When you floor the gas pedal you really hear it rumble. The good thing is, when you're coasting at highway speeds, it doesn't drown out the cab.

As far as which is louder (Super turbo vs. UltraFlo)? I'd have to say Ultra Flo.

The Dynomax website has sounds clips for each of these mufflers for a 5.2L Durango. The Ultra Flo sounds so much better!

Well it's a done deal!!!!!!!

Today I had the Dynomax Super Turbo installed.

And I must say although right now I think it's a little more quiet than I wanted, in the long it probably was the right move. It gives a low rumble, lets you know it's there in the 1200 to 2000 rpm range and then fades out. I probably should have gone with the Ultra-flo but I didn't. I look at it this way. It's easier to be happy with not quite loud enough than too loud. So it's done, I noticed more torque and it only cost me $80 installed. Now I'm looking for the right tip. Any suggestions?

I went to my exhaust shop today to have a Dynomax Super Turbo #17748 installed on my '98 Regular Cab 4x4 3.9/auto. I had them order in the muffler for me.

Come to find out the #17748 is TOO LONG for my regular cab! The body of my stock OE muffler is about 16 3/4" long (much shorter than the stock mufflers other Dakota owners seem to have from what I've read on this board).

I guess I will have to order in the shorter #17733 for my truck now.

If the # 17748 was longer looks like all they would have had to do would be cut a little off the stock pipe, I would think if they were any kind of a muffler shop that wouldn't be anything big for them.

Pistolero has a #17748 on his 2002 RC V6

I hope you can tolerate a little noise, I had a #17733 on my truck to begin with and took it off after about 1k miles. It sounded great at first but after the burn in it got louder and had a annoying buzzzz at around 1500rpm

I was thinking that myself DakotaDan (about shortening the stock pipes), but I eye-balled it while it was still on the hoist. Even if you were to put the muffler inlet right up next to the convertor, the muffler outlet would be RIGHT AT the bend where the tailpipe goes up over the rear axle.

I'm sure it could be made to work with a LOT of trimming, but I thought I would do some more research before I went any further. I would really like to retain the factory exhaust hangers, if at all possible.

Did you know that the DynoMax will flow either way, that there is no In or Out to it.
Mine is set up with the offset in and the center is the out.

You could also get the same length of muffler with different in/out positions if that would help.

I sort of used the factory hangers check my install

John RT/SE, Dan is right, I've got the #17748 on my RC V6. My truck is a 4x2, though...4x4's must have the converter installed further back on the pipe to clear the transfer case or something...I haven't seen underneath a 4x4. The 17733 is only 14" long, and I knew as soon as I drove out of the muffler shop's parking lot that it wasn't going to cut it...it was way too loud and raspy. The 17748 is 20" long, and it sounds like you may not have the space for it? Is there any leeway ahead of your cat? Could they cut the pipe and move it up closer to the front of the truck, or is the transfer case or tranny in the way? If not, you might be able to gain a few inches there. They may also be able to bend you a custom tailpipe to use with the longer muffler. Let us know how it turns out...good luck!...P

I'll keep you guys posted. With Christmas coming up, it might not be until Spring now :(

I definately want to use the 17748, from what I've read from DakotaDan and others about the sound quality.

I looked at Dan's muffler pics (from another post-Not the Viper wheel post above); on my truck convertor is definately positioned further back in the chassis.

Moparornocar, I kept my stock tailpipe because I had read on this forum that the stock tailpipe is mandrel bent. And it is! So, I decided that I would rather have mandrel 2.5 than regular bent 3 inch. The extra cost just didn't make it worth it for me. But so far a like it. A little quiet.

Hey Pistol !!!!

Got a question for you, From reading your posts you say that the DynoMax still sounds a little loud to you. Does your truck have 3 Cats ?????

I have 2 pre-Cats in the Y pipe and a main Cat after the pipe comes together.

Dan, yep...my truck also has the 2 pre-cats and the main cat. I've noticed that sometimes, the muffler seems louder than at other times, but I can't nail down the conditions. I thought that it might be louder when it's started up cold than after it warms up, but it doesn't seem to be like that consistently. I was driving it home tonight, and it sounded especially loud as I took off from a stoplight...I turned my head to listen, and it seemed really loud. Other times, it doesn't seem to be as noticeable. It's probably just me. I'll likely leave it on through the winter, and then change it out again in the spring. I was under the truck the other night, trying to determine if I could re-install the 18" Magnaflow, and put another 14" Magnaflow in front of it as a pre-silencer. I'm trying to figure a way to quiet it down, but still retain some of the better flow advantages over the stock muffler. My tailpipe has been so hacked up now, though, that I'll probably have to replace it and start over...sigh...
