Subject: Repeated stalling when cold

Has anyone experienced this situation? A friend of mine has a 94 Dakota 318 extend cab with auto. It has 98000 miles on it. It has a very annoying problem. When it is cold outside 55 degrees or colder it stalls repeatly after you let it run for a few minutes and is initially warming up and doesn't want to crank on restart. On a cold morning, he says that it will repeatly shut off while his taking his kids to school and on the way back. He says that at a stoplight he has to put it in park or nuetral and keep his foot on the gas or it will shut off and he will have a hard time starting it back up. He says that on a cold morning sometimes that he will start the truck and it will initially run fine. But if you drive it a short distance while it is warming up and stop somewhere and then go to drive it after a short period of time it will be hard to crank and repeatly stall once you start it. He has replaced the idle control valve and cleaned out the passage to the throttle body. He has replaced the coolant temperature sensor, MAT sensor, oxygen sensor, plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap, and rotor. Problem still persists and getting worse. I had wondered if it was the throttle position sensor was somehow causing the problem. He wanted to be somewhat sure that may be a problem before replacing it or anything else. He has spent so much money on it now. We also tryed changing computers yesterday. It was cold and rainy out. The truck had been sitting all day since he was at work. I put my MP computer in his truck and he started it up. He let it sit and run for 10 minutes maybe 15 at the most. He then got in and tryed to drive off. Just that quick after installing my MP computer, it stalled just like he had discribed repeatly. Every once in a while it would just spin over and not start until after 10-15 seconds. Anybody know what is going on?

when you said MAT did you
mean MAP sensor? i don`t think it is tp sensor unless you idle is up and down. i think the problem is you crank shaft position sensor. although i don`t own your vehicle that is the same problem i have seen in other vehicles. hard to start, gets hot and stops won`t restart, cools downs runs again. is your check engine light on? if it is toggle your key three times your engine light should give you the code by flashing and pauseing. write back let us know if this helps.

Whoa.. pretty new to the board, so I guess I can make this my first bit of advice ;)... When I got my 98' Sport 3.9 V6 it ran fine. Didnt have any problems with it. Then, out of the blue it started giving me problems. Small at first. Slow cranks at first, then it got to the point where it would turn over for 15-20 seconds and start. Got to the point where I was on a 4 way intersection of 2 highways, got to the middle of the damn intersection, and it cut out. I tried to crank it, couldnt... Finally, decided to power brake it, started up, released of the break (while giving it a bit of gas) and SCRREEEECHHHH... took off like a bat out of hell with some pretty sweet smoke. Then I ended up taking it work (Autozone ;) and replaced battery. Never had any starting problems in the 4-5 months since.

I checked his codes the other day when we swapped computers to see if it was the computer he had was giving him the problem. He had none. The MAT sensor is the manifold air temperature sensor located in the intake manifold. It might be the crank sensor. But, if it were the crankshaft position sensor why would it be only doing this only when it gets colder than 55 degrees outside? Wouldn't it tend to do it all the time if it were the crankshaft position sensor? I don't know I'm just asking. I will get him to check the battery for a dead cell or see if it is weak. I know when I replaced my battery a while back my truck ran better. Come to find out when I had the battery checked that the battery had two cells that were completely dried out. The battery had become damaged on the bottom of the case and had leaked the water out. Thanks for the help guys.

Wouldn't that show a code? Or is there something that can go wrong with the egr system that will not show a code? That is the strange thing about this problem. It has never produced a code other than 55. Which is end of test. Appreciate any advice. Will check it out though. Later, got to go.

when the problem comes see if it trips code? the problem seems to come and go. but not trip the computer. how is the fuel system filter, injectors, and pump. i think it the egr because the problem is temp based. you could check the sensors with multi meter and haynes or good repair manual. i would check map, tp, crank, and egr after it is warmed up and keeps stalling and reference those numbers with the manuals. egr is gummed or plugged or not working right. could be tube from egr that is plugged, egr working not tripping code.

Hello, I just recently got the same problem you have been describing above. I own a 99 dodge dakota 3.9 l manual. I was having the stalling problem for a few weeks and couldnt find it. It got progressivly worse and It just recently produced a code on the computer when the check engine light appeared. I believe it was 11 according to dealer. I brought it to the dealer and they scoped it and said the Crank sensor was failing and the Idler Air control motor was not switching fully. I picked it up last night and have not had any problems since. I hope this helps.
