Message:
I hav a 91 r/c dak with the 5.2L A500 auto trans and i seem to be having some major problems and ant figure out what is wrong.

When i first bought it i was getting around 250miles to a tank and now i am getting around 170-200miles to a tank. I have little if any throttle response. I do have a throttle body off of the 5.9L but that has not caused that much of a lose in gas mileage it does have the 318 injectors in it and all the sensors. I was progressivly getting worse gas mileage even with the 5.2L tb. so i dont think that that is the problem.

I have replaced the distributor, rotor, plugs, belt, airfilter, radiator, timing chain, water pump, oil gauge sending unit, water temp sending unit, thermostat, egr, and the egr switching solinoid and the tps.

I have check my vacum and got 17 at idle and 17 high/low at 2500 rpm. My throttle response does come and go. I can go out start it now and it will be fine drive it for 30min and its gone and this is when the engine has already run. the only thing i can think of is that its the cat but the dealer and a shop in the area cant figure it out. Oh i am not getting any codes from the comp.

Sorry for the long post but im getting sick of the gas mileage im getting and the performance im getting. I average right now 7-8mpg babying it. i was getting 11-12.
If this will help i bought it in chicago and the guy that owned it did alot of highway driveing and all i do is city driving. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

your 02 sensor is slowly going bad and is a lot cheaper to replace then a cat.

the o2 sensor will not always set a code. if it has a slow response or something along those lines, then it wont. if you beat on the cat, does it rattle? has any of the o2 sensors been changed at all?

(Replace the Cat) and the O2 sensor just for a piece of mind. My cat cost me 75 and thats for the CARSOUND HI-FLOW and the O2 was 58 dollars.

the cat does not rattle at all. if it was plugged would it rattle? The o2 sensor has never been changed and i dont rmember when the service manual recomends a change. when you say a slow response do you mean as in a slow change or a slow throttle response. also i have noticed black soot around the tail pipe

Not always does the Cat Rattle. Sometimes it just keeps making less and less power and your mileage starts to suffer because the motor has to work harder.

i looked on jegs and found two different cats one by magnaflow the other by dynomax what would be the best cat i also found one by Catco in the summit catalog. I have a air pump but plan on getting rid of it when i put headers on it next spring. Also is there a chance that i will have problems with my egr if i put headers on it?

Excuse me, but unless you're running the tank to the same level at each fill up, you CAN'T go buy miles per tank!

At each fill up, fill it up, then divide miles on that tank by the gallons on THAT fill up. Hence, miles per gallon.

This per tank thing is so innaccurate, oh wait, I just realized you may be using the overrated, inaccutare, MPG ESTIMATOR on your overhead computer.

MPG please, otherwise, you're chasing something that may not even be there.

Definitely sounds like a plugged up cat. Quite often a cat will plug due to a faulty O2 sensor so I'd replace them both. Or if you are on a budget - gut the cat.

Cheers!

I fill the tank with 19-20 gallons every week. I am 18 so i do accationally hot rod the truck. I do run it hard though about every day or two and in the past two days i have been in it hard because it getts me aggrevated. Also because its a 91 i dont have a overhead computer display. I had the shop check it out and they found nothing wrong with it. so i gues the next step is doing a back pressure test. If i gut the cat what will it sound like. could i put a piece of pipe in place of the cat? thanks for your help

I've seen O2 sensors completly dead that did not code, the thing just ran bad. With a DAk that old the cat is more likely burned out, which means there ain't nothin but a empty/hollow case sittin there. You should replace your O2 sensor every 60,000 mi.

I had the shop look at it yesterday and they hooked up one of their computers to it and got good numbers for everything he said that the o2 sensor was still good so i took it to an exahust shop today and they did a backpressure test and got a 3 one time and a 0 the second time. So they think that a piece of the catylist has burned up and is sitting somewhere in the pipe. I figured my mpg yesterday and i am getting a lovely 7mpg
