Your best bet is to find a whole diff setup or get an aftermarket diff. Auburn is a good one to start looking into.

I dont really want to change the whole unit I would like to upgrade what is there with factory parts if possible. My truck is a Quad cab so i am not really looking for race parts as the truck will never be that fast and more than likely will never see any trackl time. I just hate the way the open diff acts. Cant do a doughnut for your life in this truck...lol

It's not a tough job. In fact, theoretically, you
shouldn't even need to remove the pinion. You
just pull the case, remove the ring gear and
install it on your new limited slip case and re-
install it. You want to check your pinion depth
(gear engagement pattern) and case side-
play, but your pinion bearing pre-load will be
fine since you didn't remove it. If you want OEM
parts, you can order the Dana trac-loc for an
8.25" or 9.25" rear end (whichever you have)
from your local dealer for big bucks, or from
an aftermarket company like Drivetrain.com or
Randy's R & P. I know Drivetrain.com had
them for $230 earlier this year. Your gonna
wan't a rebuild kit and case side bearing kit if
it's not included.

Ahhh....just in time. My limited slip is worn out and I have quite a bit of play in the rear diff. I've been looking for some good prices to go through and fix er up. I'm a little nervous about doing all the adjustments correctly. I've done it when I was in drivetrain class, but it's been a while since then. Might as well do it now, while I'm in the middle of my engine rebuild so I have a good solid rear end when I get my new HorsePower :) :)

Get a Loc-Rite.Its a "locker" , its a little over $300 , and you retain the factory spider gear carrier , which in turn means much less labor.Just pop the diff cover, remove the pin from the carrier , take the c-clip off the axles , slide the axles out about enough to be out of the way but still hold the carrier in place , remove the 4 spider gears , install locker , push axles in , install clips and carrier ,then neww gasket , cover , fill with fluid and your ready to roll.
you wont need to adjust , backlash , etc. or anything.Get a "Haynes" repair manual, they help a great deal. A great place to get this stuff is "Rays ring and pinion" at www.ringpinion.com , they,re super friendly and have great over the phone tech support. Good Luck !
