Subject: Radiator upgrade. Help CW?
IP: Logged

Message:
I had been needing a new radiator and I searched and searched to find an aftermarket one that woudl fit directly with OEM. I found nothing. I tried calling many places, but still got nothing. So I finally broke down and just said screw it. I bought a radiator from performanceradiator.com for ~250 shipped. What I didn't know was they are in Spokane, so the thing came to my house in Montana the very next day!

I pulled it out of the box and noticed it seemed to be thicker than the stock one. This one comes with the oil cooler. I was wondering if that oil cooler is what makes it larger than my stock radiator. It's about twice as thick. It would be awesome if this turned out to be a larger radiator! Can anyone help me with this? CW? If you notice on the stock one there is penty room to make it thicker, but it isn't, the cooling section only covers part of the side brackets.

It appears to be pretty good build quality and for the price is hard to beat. Only time will tell how good it really is.

In case anyone was wondering, performanceradiator.com doesn't seem to be too bad. I've seen a lot of other posts online and most people are very happy with their radiators from them.

If the actual cooling part of the rad is thicker then yes it is a more heavey duty rad. If only the tanks are thicker it is just made a little different thats all. The cooler is for the auto only and has nothing to do with the thickness, from what I have seen. There is room for more rad but I certainly haven't found a reason for it. How come you need one for a new truck?

Current one is at a 135 degree bend in the middle. That's kinda cool it's a bit heavier duty. I knew there was room to expand on those damn things when I looked at it. I should get some pictures of it.

I'd have to say that the new one will mount up a lot easier than the old one. Of course we haven't seen the rest of the truck......

Is there a corresponding 135-deg bend in the front bumper & grille, too? How bout the hood?

Grille: No, no angle here. It's two pieces.
Hood: I made a cowl!
Bumper: Kinda flat for a bumper.

I have replacements for all those already. The radiator was actually my final piece before I get to assemble everything.

You got a heavy duty radiator. A heavy duty will have more rows of tubes and usually more fins per inch between the tubes. This will help with towing and any mods that cause the motor to run hot. Good choice, good luck.

Nice! I guess I don't need to put a clutch fan back on then. I got a black magic 150 and 180 t-stat too. Yey for cooling! I would like to say I made a nice choice, but I got it by pure luck. I almost got one from the dealership. Now I am glad I didn't.

Thanks!

If you feel like you still need the fan clutch and fan assembly at any point in the future (and if those were lost in the wreck) I have a spare one of both of those in the Mopar Boxes and i am trying to get rid of them.......
