I'm taking my dak to the drag strip for the first time. I've raced a lot, but always an auto. Where do you other 5-speed guys shift?
I've got a 4.7 5-speed, open-element filter with 3" cat and cat-back.
Thanks

I used to shift at like 4800 RPMs then I figured out I got about a .1 to .2 better by shifting at just beyond 5000 at like 5200 or so, anything beyond that without extensive modds is a waste and you can feel it, I can see it on my recent dyno run print out! I actually make my most HP at like 4350 or so but you have to go higher so when you shift it fall back into the power band and not way below it. Prolly 5100 so you can account for like an 800RPM drop!

Well I've done a little more than you have as far as performance on mine, so The shift points suggested by DMS Dak may be more appropriate than my suggestions, but here goes.

1st to 2nd gear about 5700 rpms, the split between these 2 gears is minimal, so the rpm lose is low. It will drop about 1200 rpms and put you about 4500 for 2nd.

2nd to 3rd gear about 6000 rpms, the split between these 2 gears is large. The rpms lost is about 2000 and will put you back to about 4000 after shift. (this is why I want a 6 speed gear box) so it has to pull harder to get back up to power.

3rd to 4th gear about 5700 rpms, the split between these 2 gears is wide also, but in 3rd gear it seems that it almost quits pulling at 5700. it will drop you back about 1500 rpms to 4200.

I have a video showing how these shift points work for me. Just let me know and I'll post a link.

Later,

The reason I chimed in on this one was becasue I have very similar mods to Hoss318, I also have an Airaid Intake and Flowmaster Force II Cat Back! But hey yours is more in detail so Id say go for that. I just dont feel mine with the mods it has needs to pull to 6000 because it seems to just fall on its face just before that. I found out the other day when trying to pull to 6000 that I have a fuel shut-off at that point :-)! HEHE I hope that wont hurt anything hitting that just once? Hey Hoss318 you can see my dyno pull that I made with similar mods to you at:

DMSDAK....

That's cool on your dyno run... I dyno'd the truck soon after I got it. With 2,000 miles on the odo. . The only mod be a Flowmaster with a turndown.

Here's a link to the video.
http://www.nazman.stangnet.com/Video/Jason's%20HemiCota.avi

As far as the shift-point situation goes...Play with it... I tried all sorts of ways...

I start out by staging at about 2,800, feather the clutch out of the hole, bang 2nd at 5,600, go into 3rd at 5,500, 4th at 5,500

My truck has a flowbastard, Lakewood bars 275-60-15 SS20's, no spare, and a tonneau

My best run to date was a 14.8 @ 91mph
The average is anywhere from a 14.9-15.1 depending on 60ft'er which range from 1.90's to 2.10's....

Just play around with it...You'll find the sweet spots.

Good luck, and post your results when you get back.

My 2 cents also ...

I dyno'd mine in 100% stock form, then calculated shift points.

mine's a 5 spd, 3.55 gears, 2wd, Y2000, 4.7L

Based on maximum area under the hp curve here were the results:

1st - 2nd: 4800RPM
2nd - 3rd: 4700RPM
3rd - 4th: 4450RPM

Keep in mind though, that's a 100% stock setup, and I dyno'd it at 3800' so my hp curve is going to be a little lower in the RPM band. The second school of thought on optimum shift points is to end up at the same hp number that you shifted at (thereby 'straddling' the hp peak). Using that method, here were the results:

1st - 2nd: 4993RPM
2nd - 3rd: 4999RPM
3rd - 4th: 4998RPM

Again, keep in mind that was for a 100% stock dyno sheet. .. the more mods you have, the higher up the RPM bend you'll likely be shifting.

If you have your own dyno results, the best thing to do is to do the calculations yourself.

Thanks for all the info! I'll shoot for 5000 rpm, but it is my first time down the track doing my own shifting, so god only knows what I'll ACTUALLY shift at :-)
notchlx....... what rear do you have? I imagine running 14.8 with those mods you've got the 3.92? I'd love to hit 14s my first time out, but have the 3.55 (though I get 20+mpg highway :-)
Thanks all! I'll post results later tonight.

Yes HOSS, I have the 3:92 rears. I have seen folks with the 3:55's in the 14's though with minimal mods.

Good Luck

Before the cams I shifted at about 5500rpm. Since then Ive got the cams, exhaust, TB, iat adj., removed clutch fan. After all that it pulls up to 6000rpm so thats usually when Ill shift right before smacking the limiter. Going to the track Fri w/ some slicks for the first time and hopfully hunting for mid to low 14's :)

Kicker,

Good to see you've got some mods slapped on that thing.

Let us know how everything goes.

I'm still trying to contemplate whether or not I want to do anything to the truck other than supercharge... It just runs too good for me to go tinkering with it.

Keep us posted.....Good luck

Well, my first run was 18+ seconds..... kinda had some trouble hooking up..hehe
My best run was 15.2. I've got a K&N intake (for sale by the way), a 3" cat and cat-back. I was granny shifting it the whole way, 3/4 tank of gas, tailgate on and up.
I'm thinking, without spending any more money, I can hit the 14s. I'll drop the clutch fan, drop the tail gate, burn off some gas....
Anyway, not bad at all for a pretty much stock truck.
And back to the point... I was shifting usually just below 5000. I held a shift or two above 5000, and really felt a drop in power.
Thanks for the info. I'll have more times next week!
