well those are basically the same car... 325 hp/weight/gearing/induction.

i have raced and beaten several newer (LS1) Z28's but never a SS. I am sure i would of had just as good a victory. There was a 35th anniversary edition at the local strip one day and he had slicks and exhaust.... he ran a 8.8 and i ran a 8.95 that day. So that modded one just barely got away (but we didnt race each other).

well at that time i was running:

mopar cold air induction
100 shot of nitrous
1.7 roller rockers
magnum performance throttle body
msd stuff
and my rear suspension crap
with slicks
and that was with the stock 3.55 geared open diff.

now i have a new thing going....

those times come out to be low 13 second 1/4's. If i had that same set up right now with 4.10 gears and a limited slip i am positive that my truck was capable of 12s.

LS1 and LT1 have nothing in common. LS1 is a clean-sheet design (like the Dodge 5.7 Hemi). LS1/LS6 engines are just now realizing their potential. 98-2002 F-body's are routinely dynoing over 300 hp at the rear wheels (340-360 flywheel hp). And that's on pump gas, 3-year 36,000 mile warranty and can pull down 26-30 mpg on the highway! Wish I had one of these in my Dak!

hey ass,
i dont have a smart ass comment because i am a fan of the f-body. My family has owned more than you have fingers on your hands.

The LT1 is a iron block with reverse flow aluminum heads. With the coolant going through the heads first they were able to boost the compression to 11:1. The earlier ones produced 275 hp at the crank and with the addition of another catalytic converter in 1996 they came with an additional 10 hp to up it to 285. I can go forever about it but those are some of the main things different from the LS1.

The LS1 is an all aluminum engine with iron sleeves for the pistons. Has a compression ratio of 10.1. A different ignition system (eight coils just over the plugs). Single bore throttle body (dual bore on LT1). Earlier models produced a claimed 305 horsepower on the Z28 and 320 on the SS/TA. Later that upped to 310 and 325.

blah blah blah blah blah!!!

here are the f-bodies that we currently own:
2000 Z28
1996 Firebird Formula
1991 Camaro RS v8
1979 Z28 ran a 7.5 in the 1/8th

others previously owned
1991 RS V6
1982 camaro
1979 Z28
1976 camaro
1974 camaro
1974 camaro
1973 camaro

afi,

my moms car gets about 23mpg going to work and 25ish going all highway... that went from 20 mpg after they got there ultra z ran air hood. I didnt make the comment about the mileage but its true.. my brother's with the 6 speed (.5 6th gear) gets about 29 mpg on the highway. My mom's car dynoed 307 at the wheels (automatic) and i was there with my dad. Later my dad added a hypertech programmer (minimum 25 rwhp from tests) and a loud mouth exhaust from SLP... that exhaust is a full 3" with no muffler and dual 4" tips. So i would say 330 rwhp is a big under estimate.

LS1, if that was my question, yes... there is one about 1.5 hours away (Ennis) but a 1/8th mile about half an hour away. My moms car only has 2.73 gears in it so my dad wont race it until he gets new gears in it. It's really freaking fast right now so i couldnt imagine what new shorter gears would do.

afi,
another thing... i am a 20-30 year old guy and my mom has been married to my dad for 29 years now.

Based strictly on the injected engines:

LT-5 (DOHC, designed by Yamaha, built by Mercury Marine) 385-405HP, quite on the expensive side
LS-1 305-405HP
LT-1 275-320HP
TPI 250-260HP
Vortec 230HP (trucks)
Crossfire 200-250HP (late '70s early '80s Corvettes)
TBI 160-230 (mainly trucks)

On the carbeurated side, the list is alot longer and I don't even come close to knowing them all, though I'd expect the original LT1 (1970 Corvette ZR-1 package) is probably at the top w/ 370HP for the unmodified side.

same weight, same hp, same gearing, same ENGINE, same TRANNY..... it would take like 30-50 more hp to beat it by that much more... And at the track i have seen several trans am vs camaro races.... and the trans am has always lost... in fact my friend with his 99 Z28 beat another guy in a WS6.... funny thing is my truck beat his 99 Z28.

Its hard to say that anyone is wrong because this is all based on Driver skill and track conditions. Mod for Mod the WS6 will consistantly get better performance than the Z28 or SS. The only true way of getting the truth is to have the two cars identical in everyway. Identical Mods, Tires, Trans, Air induction, Track conditions, and Driver... Create these conditions and I will take your word as truth!

whoa whoa whoa, hoss...like i stated i wasnt ripping on your mom (and didnt mention your father and their marriage)...all i was saying is that my mom's g.t. gets a lot better mileage when she drives it for a week opposed to me....due to the fact that i, like every other red-blooded american young man should, have a very heavy v8 loving foot.

and yes, i race the 1/4 mile :), my best times are as follows:
2.159 60'/6.159 330'/9.426 .8 mile @ 75.38/12.231 1000'/14.591 1/4mi @ 95.36...not TOO impressive
so what...youll beat me halfway down the track...ill still be waiting for about 4 seconds for you to get to the end of the 1320....
so much bad blood on these posts...cant we all smile and race :)

Well, i guess its all up to the driver because the editor of G.M. High Tech Performance got a 12.9 with a stock f body. Sorry i thought the WS6 had more power than that. A 8.8 would be close to a 13.4 in the 1/4. My friend that beat his other friend in the ws6 got a 14.0 in the 1/4 so i know that he is not that great of a driver.

you need to read what you type dude... i wasnt getting hot or anything but just re-read that. that didnt say anything about your mom's g.t. get better gas mileage. i am glad that you have raced on a quarter mile... i havent... BIG DEAL! my truck isnt running right now so it is kinda pointless. I dont want to run the quarter until my truck is in the 12 second range (8-8.5 8th) because i would just be wasting my money... the 1/8th mile track is a lot closer and cheaper to run at.
