I've looked into the Carb requirements (I live in California). K$N and Volant are the only intakes that carry the Carb certification sticker.

Even though the above items carry the certification for the 2000's, I have not installed the tube (just a K$N drop-in) because, according to many posts, they don't work that well on the 4.7's for the money paid. The reasoning behind this is that the stock 4.7 unit is already very efficient and any further modifications are a waste of money.

The people that sell them on this site say they work great. The people who bought them say they're not that good.

Since we Californians have only the two most expensive brands to choice from (smog regulations), I would appreciate any recent input from non-sellers regarding any reasonable increases in mpg, horsepower or torque that will verify what many performance retailers claim.

Do they take away low-end torque from the 4.7's like many past posts have claimed?

Again, from what I've read they don't look that promising.

4.7 auto, CC, 3.92LS, Leach "Flash", 3" Gibson single-out, mobil 1, K&N drop-in, redline rear-end fluid ( installing my HO cams, autolite plugs, RS T-stat next week).

Bruce,

I'm just as curious as you about the performance of the aftermarket intakes.
Today they are putting all my furniture in big boxes to ship it back to the USA. I don't like having the IP Z-tube under the hood for someone to take and I'm going to replace it with the stock unit.
Suffering from the Curiosity of gains in the unit, I'm going to have the truck dyno'd in Colorado shortly after it arrives. This is for the baseline of the truck to know the gains of Bernd's turbo. Since I'm going to do 3 pulls, I will do the first with the stock intake and the next 2 pulls with the z-tube on. When these are done I will post the results for the other curious people. I realize that the z-tube is not C.A.R.B. Approved, but it will give an Idea for the other after market intakes, as to whether they actually make a difference.

Later,

I'm originally from CA, my truck is licenced (and hence smog checked) in CA, and my truck is currently in CA (I'm in Korea and couldn't bring it with me). Just mentioned that for frame of reference.

I've got the Z-tube with the cold air canister and I really like it. I didn't notice any loss in low end, and I gained part throttle response...MUCH more responsive than the stock system. Don't know if I gained any power or not since I've never had the truck on a dyano, but as I said it feels more responsive with the Z-tube installed. And it sounds great...it's a nice counterpart to my Gibson single exhaust.

However before I left for Korea I re-installed the stock setup in case my dad would have to get the truck smog checked while I'm here...I think it's due to be checked right before I return. I knew it didn't have the CARB approval and I knew it would fail a visual inspection. The truck immediately felt sluggish after re-installing the stock setup. That tells me that the stock setup doesn't flow as well as a good aftermarket air intake. So I'd disagree with those who say that air intakes don't do anything. On the flip side, installing and un-installing the stock air intake is kind of a pain for just a smog check, but I don't mind tinkering around under the hood.

I didn't notice any change in gas mileage between the stock setup and the Z-tube.

I thought hard about the Volant, but chose the Z-tube because it had the filter canister available...I'm not too keen on having an exposed filter underhood because I have an irrational fear of sucking water into the engine when I take my truck off-road or when driving through standing water on the road.

But if I lived full-time in CA I'd probably have bought the volant and then rigged up a canister for it.

its not hard to take the intake off before an
inspection and the chances of being checked
in one of those portable smog devices is slim
to none. just buy the IP z-tube and get over it,
the stock air hat can be re-installed in a few
minutes. BTW I live in CA also.

I live in Cali, and I use the 360AirIntakez...screw the C.A.R.B. Sticker, when it comes to smog time, I'll just switch back, it'll only take 15-20 minutes. The 360 was about $180, less than the Volant and K&N and looks much better than both of them (and it uses the 9" K&N cone filter).
