Subject: horrible ETs , ready to give up on mods
IP: Logged

Message:
Just got back from the track tonight. I am VERY disappointed.

99 R/T reg cab

K&N intake
52mm TB
M1 2 brl w/ sm. turtle
Mopar headers (jet hot)
hi flow cat
Gibson 3" single
accell brass cap / rotor
3923s
taylor wires
MP PCM
Roe racing controller ( low +4 , high -18)
relocated IAT
Mobil 1 oil
MT ET streets
45ºF air ,low elevation
O.D. off

60` 2.19 slicks no better than RSAs
1/4 14.85
mph 93.35

Thats pathetic if you ask me. I have over 3K in parts on it now and I`m running stock times. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY R/T ??? I`m ready to give up and I still have 2.02 ported heads , cam , RRs , trq converter to put on. I think I wasted my money.

those 60' times seem a lil slow, try varying launch tecnique, tire air pressures, etc. traction bars are an inexpensive mod that when set up correctly, really pay off.

BTW, what is your launch technique, what size et streets, what tire pressure in the slicks (tubes or not). what rear gear ratio?

Times seem on par as stock is 15.4 for most... No 1.7 rockers??? Those would put you in the 14.5 range-- 94-95 mph.

What pressure on the ETs????? Try 13-14 psi cold.

The bug has you-- you are really close to breaking into something much quicker (that's the way it goes).

(I've got an extra set of Crower 1.7s that I am going to send back to Crower as I have no takers...)

I launch it at about 1200-1400 rpm.
I do a 5 sec. burnout before staging.

I ran 3 times that night.

14.859 >93.3 mph
14.853 >93.3
15.004 (wheel hop and 2.33 60` ft.)

I just think thats terrible after i spent 850 bux on M1 2 brl and the Roe controller. It felt alot faster after I put those on but I guess not.
Ran 15.1s before.

For another $3000 maybe I can get into the 16s.
hee hee
Sam , I`d buy those 1.7s but I already have 1.6s to go with a cam.

Now I know the 360 isn't exactly modern technology, but I know that on a lot of newer vehicles, they respond a whole lot better with a flash on the computer to let it know about your new mods.

With your new heads, cam, RR, and converter working with your current mods, get the thing up on a dyno. Check A/F see what your looking like. You may be running too rich/lean.. Get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. When you get the results from the dyno, you may find that you need a custom tune.. I haven't dealt with Leach, but if he's as good as they say he is, he could look at your A/F dyno results, and burn/flash a new program to work for you.

Just something to think about. I know it's frustrating, when all you want to do is go faster. Finish the job you started, and I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result.

What was your speed (mph) before the
mods? If you've picked up mph, you've added
power.

15.1 to 14.8 is a BIG improvement in my book.

You need to work on your 60' in my opinion. I
don't race my Quad Cab, but I race my beater
Mustang 5.0. I've found that a tenth on the 60'
will get you two tenths on the other end.

I agree with rtdkota, try 12 or 13 psi cold
pressure in your slicks. Make sure you use
rim screws if the tires spin on the
wheels.(Mark them with a sharpie or chalk)

Do you have anything to help you hook
(besides slicks)? Spring clamps work well
and are cheap, as are "slapper" bars.(IMHO
slapper bars on a truck = gay) You could also
use some 2 or 3 degree shims to increase
your pinion angle, improving bite and
decreasing wheel hop.

Air bags, disconnecting your front sway bar,
and/or some weight in the bed might also
help. I've heard excellent things about Cal-trac
bars, but they are expensive.

All the power in the world isn't going to help
unless you can hook it.

I've seen lots of guys dump thousands upon
thousands of dollers on their car/truck only to
go slower because they don't have the right
combination. Big cams, big exhaust and
larger throttle bodies KILL low end power.

Thowing parts at it is useless unless you
know it's going to work AND you'll be able to
hook it. I'd make sure the engine combo.
you're putting together is proven to work well.
If not, you're more than likely to slow down.

my 2 cents

Hope this helps,

BUT

Custom fabbed slapper bars that actually fit the truck combined with DOT tires = 1.98 short times with a 4200lb truck and a 3.55 gear

I found that doing a good 'dry' burnout, up to about 10 seconds did the best for me (sub 2.0s on a crappy non prepped track).

So far, when I hit about 7 seconds-- the truck actually starts to creep forward then goes 'vvvvrrraCKeeee' and pulls 5-8 feet ahead during the burnout... I run up to the line and get ready for take-off. 14 psi on my RC works.

This is with 26" ET 10.5"

Qestion: Does it seem to have really good pull on the freeway when you romp on it? And is it even close to the feel you get at the track?

One more thing.... Did you idle alot before you ran your times?

Without a bigger cam, the parts combo you have just dont work well. If your a computer dude, then this might help. Lets say you bought yourself a G-force 128MB 4600 video card,1GB RAM,15K RPM HD, PERC3/SCSI CARD, SUPER EVERYTHING and you forgot to upgrade your processor from a old 8088 :) or maybe some newer PII233MHZ, then the it's just not going to work well, so forget playing any games. A cam is a foundation of a good engine, from there everything else gets selected. You have a 0-4000rpms cam with a 3000-6500rpm combo setup, that 1000rpms narrow power band is not going to pull your threw a 1/4 much faster than stock.

Ill try to reply to everybodys comments and questions here :

Zip-E : I have a trans-go shift kit, but doesnt do any good if its still in the box. :-)

notchlx : I agree , I might need a custom flash. I just cant see paying 600 for it. I am running good A/F ratio thnx to the Roe controller. 2nd blue (13.2 to 1 A/F) comes on at WOT.

Lemmers : 91 something mph before , 93.3 mph after. I have no other traction devices on now. I have Cal-tracs but still in a box.

CW: yes it definitely needs a cam and a stall which I have but not on.

rtdkota: love the description sound effect. During my burnout the ass kicks left and I almost wind up on a 45

EyeTrip: yes it feels awesome on the road but not the same at the track. Probably cause we are looking at the finish line way down there during acceleration. It didnt idle alot before running. I was 4th in line when I got there after a 30min cool down with hood up. it was 45ºF that night too.

cudashoe: dont have stock TB. Used as core exchange for QuickD TB.

buddy jones: lotta complaints about this track. people not hooking up good all night. Wanna try diff. one.

AnthonyG : i know im building a "puzzle" need to add more pieces. Heads and cam.

Thank you for all your replys. I appreciate it.

Other times I saw that night:

Syclone- 13.03 @ 102 stock ? wouldnt doubt it
Z06 - 12.4 @ ?? stock ?
03 Cobra- 11.97 @ 112 probably had pulley
Camaro SS -12.8 @ ?? didnt sound stock
snowmobile- 11.11 yikes
mid 90s Caddy- 15.05 Northstar ?
93/94 Mustang GT - 13.0x @ 111 bigtime traction problems and had whistling sound. Vortech

It says : "guaranteed to produce 320 RWHP ,low to mid 13s reg cab , high 13s club cab , sticky tires needed"

so I hope to see 1.1 to 1.5 sec. gain with mods yet to put on.( 2.02 ported , .507/.507 220/230 cam , 1.6 RRs , Mopar converter) Of course with good traction.
I hope I am not dissapointed. Yes , I have been bitten by the bug.

Yea, anyone with a good setup can run high 12's 13's with a car. But it takes a awsome truck to make 12's and 13's and even 14's. No cares when a Viper or Sport car pull's up at the tree and smokes another sports car or truck. But when a Trucks pull out the can of you know what, everyone notices the poor sap in the sport car. :)
It's awsome when your's smoking Mustangs and old Corvettes in a street truck. I might not be pulling 12's, but they sure take notice when I'm out there. Even the annoucers always have good comments. Could be the racing stripes.

The biggest problem with the R/T is the Transmission they seem to be lazy shifting and this is all because of MOM AND POP i want a car that looks like a truck. There are a few Mods to do the transmission to make it work much better and shift harder which is the culprit to your slow E.T times. Just ask any ole MOPAR man that runs the Track he should be able to help you out.The Transmission is a derivative of the old 727 and it is virtually bulletproof but the OD and the softing of the shifts is what hurts this is actually a good damn Transmission

Flamed92Dak , I could pick up maybe a tenth with the TransGo. Cant see much more than that. Thing I like most about a shift kit is it chirps the tires when it shifts or breaks em loose for a sec.

whtdakota , I did reset the PCM after i put on the M1.

I was toying with some #s on a ET/HP calculator.
I picked up about 25 HP with the M1 , relocate IAT and Roe controller. Have to dyno it to be sure. But something around there.
