Message:
i have a 2000 dakota slt cc with 4.7 its time for an exhaust system i am planning on getting 3" flowmaster force II cat back and i want to get the most out of it and i want to know if i should get rid of the cat or go with high flow cat i dont have to worry about emissions test, i also plan on if removeing the cat get the shop to weld up 3" form manifolds to the cat back. if it is better to remove the cat if i weld the o2 sensor back in place will i still need to get a cat box to correct the pcm or what. Please any help will be apreciated. Thanks

If you remove the cat, the O2 sensor will send a signal to the computer saying you have a bad cat, turn on your check engine light and idle rough. Your best bet is to replace the cat with a high flow one. You don't have to worry about a possible fine if caught and I for one like the news that the ozone layer holes are shrinking. I just replaced the one on my SS/T with a Carsound Cat and a Flowmaster 40 series. It sounds mean. Good luck.

Get rid of it all together, as long as you can take care of the o2 sensor.

ok i quess i am gona get rid of the cat unless i get a reason not to. my next question is there a way to make a thing to trick the pcm to think the cat is still there or do i have to just buy one of the cat boxes form speedtweeks, in other words can i build one my self or do i need to buy one.
one more question should i just run 3" from the cat back to the y pipe or would it be better to get a 3' y pipe i think i saw somewere were it said that would hurt preformce wiht 3" y pipe.

So i have a 00' 3.9 ... and i want to get an exhaust system... for example the gibson catback 2.5 " Do I have to worry about anything in regards to passing "AirCare" (Emissions testing) ? Or do i just buy the system and chop out the old one and put the new one straight in ? ?

dewalt: The difference in both price and performance for the free-flow or no cat will probably be negligible. It's your choice. Both will help performance though.

BlkDak: Most cat-back exhaust systems should be C.A.R.B. legal. Just call the company. Cat-backs are such a common mod to many vehicles that they shouldn't have much if any effect on emmisions.

you only need kat boxes when you eliminate the precats on the manifold. you dont need them to remove the main cat. Your engine will not know you removed the main cat and will run fine. all the o2 sensors deal with the precats. I didnt run a main cat for about a year and never had one light come on or any problems. Now to gain horspower from the 4.7 by changing exhuast wont really give you the results your probly looking for.It a sound great, but the 4.7 is pretty tweeked in that area. a dyno test shows only about a 2 horspower gain with a catback system. I dont care what they tell you! thats all youll get because of the design of the 4.7. Now if you put a good set of headers on there, like JBA or Gibson you will get a dyno gain of about 12 horspower. If you go the JBA route and lose the precats, then you will need two catboxes from a place like KRC performance.
