I have a 1997 dakota with the 5.2 V-8 and I was wanting to know if there was a cam out there for our trucks that can give it a rough idle but still run correctley. I was just asking because I have a 1969 chevelle SS 396 with high duration cam and I love the way it idles. Any help would be great.

You want a cam for your Dodge 318 so it will have the loping idle..? Is that your main reason..?

hey there,

be careful, your chevelle is carb. the computer on your dakota can't calibrate for very high durations. you will gain power but it will not be as simple as that.

i installed the mopar r/t cam in my 93, and had a great effect on power and torque, they offer a higher lift cam which I heard in a ram 318 it sounded a little rougher, but not loping all too much.

Keep in mind that you dak. has a solid roller and hollow push rods to allow access and pressure for oiling the rocker. When you get into higher lift they require drilled cams and solid pushrods for oiling and therefor takes away from the pressure in you computer controled system. Ever noticed that as soon as you pull a senser the computer can't control as well? It will throw every thing off

Not many companies will make it because with a hydrolic roller system(like yours) you can increase lift more without changes to the rest of the system, but a mecanical system does not interchange with the computer contolled system.

I do however recommend the mopar cam/computer setup

If you have your computer tuned you should be fine with a pretty agressive cam. I now have a 360 but when I had my 318 I put a Crower cam in. The specs are 216/216@.050 and .475 lift. With no cat it sounded mean. It had an old school sound to it. It would stall for about a week then the comp. would learn it. If you go any bigger you will need tuning.

I've got a Crower custom cam .512/512, 208/204.. No problems-- runs like a raped ape, and has great idle/low end...
