Subject: 4.7L w/3.55 going to 3.90 or 4.11
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 01 Dak QC SLT with HD Service group, Tow Package, 4.7L Automatic and 3.55, I am considering changing out my gears for either the 3.90 or 4.11 with Positrac. Reason, towing... Recently while towing my 25' Coleman Caravan through the apalachia mnts I discovered that the 4.7L / 3.55 combo just wasn't enough, one tow I would not want to repeat. My trailer weighs in at ~5200 lbs.

My question is, which gear ratio would be most beneficial. Keep in mind that the truck is driven around town and occassionally on the highway when it isn't towing. Also, is there any benefit to performance by changing out the torque convertor or is the gear ratio where I get the most bang for my buck?

Thanks,
DakQC

changing the gears in it will help drastically. a gear swap will make it alot easier to get the truck and trailer moving so u dont have to lug the engine down. a swap to 3.91's would be pretty good. the 45RFE trans had a pretty high 4th gear so u wont see much of an RPM change on the highway, just a few humdred RPM's. also a lower gear in the city will help ur gas mileage by not using as much power to get the truck moving. go with a 3.91.

I went from 3:55 open, to a 4:10 posi. I have a
2001, Auto with the HO cams & intake. It
makes the truck really fun to drive. It moves the
rpm's up into the power band. If you do alot of
city driving, you won't see very much of a
milage difference. If you do alot of freeway
driving you will lost about 1-1.5 mpg. At 65mph
you will be taching about 2700.

You can put OEM 4.10 in the corp 9.25 too. OEM just doesn't make 4.56s. Man I would love to test drive a set of those.

Yeh, Ring & Pinion has the 4.11 for the 9.25. I was just curious if the 4.11 would be overkill for a daily driver and if it would take too much off the top speed and cause me to lose my ability to travel highway at 75 to 80 moh due to high RPM's. Any ideas?

Thanks,
DakQC

Dak,

You can easily guesstimate what the RPM will be. Divide the new ratio by the existing. Multiply that times the RPM at your desired speed, the product is the revised RPM.

Example:

4.10/3.55=1.155
1.155 x 3000 RPM (@90 MPH)= 3465 RPM

Hope this helps.

Chipster - "went from 3:55 open, to a 4:10 posi. I have a 2001"

I am curious to hear more about your experience with the 4.10 posi. I am seriously considering the 4.11 posi and wonder what the RPM's are at 60 and 70 with OD off. I will be towing with this set-up and need the extra pulling power that I think the 4.11 will give over my current set-up (3.55) and possibly even over the 3.92. I can only do this once, so I want to get it right the first time...

Thanks,
DakQC

I have an '01 QC with the 4.7 and at 70 with the OD off I am hitting right around 3400 I think. With OD on I hit around 2500. Before the gear swap (3.55's to 4.10's) you can subtract 500 from those figures.

Are you conmfortable running 70 MPH with OD Off and sitting at 3400 RPM for a long time. Is there anything I should be concerned with (engine cooling, etc.) with RPM's at 3400 RPM for several hundred miles? I tow with this truck, and when I tow the camper I always turn off the OD. So when I take a trip and average 60-70 MPH on the freeway I am worried that the RPM's may be too high. Any thoughts?

After crunching some numbers today (actually using an RPM calculator on the internet), theoretically if I were to upgrade the rear on my 4.7L Dak QC, to 4.11 gear I could expect to run 2430 RPM's w/OD at 70 MPH and 3377 RPM's without/OD at 70 MPH. Is 3377 RPM's too high to run for several hundred miles? I am thinking not since I looked at the power/torque curve for the 4.7L, 3377 RPM's actually looks to be the best performing RPM range for the 4.7L. Is this correct?

Thanks,
DakQC

I asked about this a few weeks ago and everyone said there is not way to put a 4.10 or higher on my 4.7L 4x4.

So has somthing changed?

I would love to go to the 4.10 with my 31" tires. I think I would see a nice increase and with the larger tires I don't think the freeway driving would kill me to badly, specailly as I want to move to the 33"

My Dak is a 4x2. I know that Ring and Pinion (www.ring-pinion.com) has the 4.11 gears to fit the 9.25 rear-end (which I have). I do not know if something is different for a 4x4, but I have been told that I can do this with the 4x2.

I am just trying to gather input from those who have installed the 4.11 gears and how well it does on the freeway.

DakQC,

You won't have any problems since you have the tow package, which should come with a trans. cooler. Since you are towing in the mountains you shouldn't lose any mpg with the change. If you are worried about the RPM's you could always go with 3.92's. The rpm's should be 150 less with the 4.11 also with the OD off.

I can see where the 4.10's are really do-able. Especially since I only run with OD off when towing and when towing I stick around 65 Mph.

Thanks.
