Subject: O-Ringing the Heads - BAD!
IP: Logged

Message:

I'm posting this due to a problem I had to take care of for another engine tuner out there.

You do NOT O-Ring the heads as some people say/claim/swear by. Some other "tuners" will also claim that O-Ringing the heads is best...this is FAR FROM THE TRUTH. O-Ringing the heads is just plain silly. The heads shift slightly when tightened down and can cause the O-Ring on the heads to shift as well...killing the head gasket and/or fire ring. (Don't believe me...i've got pictures of this process from another Dodge engine builder...head gaskets blew out after a few runs - they O-Ringed the heads.)

If you're going to O-Ring anything, it MUST be done on the block and put a receiver groove in the heads. The block is much less prone to warping/shifting than the heads. Make sure you also have the block/heads with you when this is done to match them up properly. No Mopar engine (or any other at that) matches up perfectly on the head/block surface between castings.

Wow , I would like to see how they grooved the heads - not even sure how you would set it up. I have O ringed a few engines and used the sleazy Isky Groove-A-Matic with acceptable results.

It sounds like the same guys that did a 440 one of my friends bought for parts - they welded on the tops of the pistons with a mig welder to make some home made pop up's

I bet that was a well balanced engine, couldn't have been more than a couple Ounces difference in the weight of the pistons and such. I bet the valve clearance was realy good under higher rpm's.

And you know that welding on the top of the pistons like that had to reinforce them and make them stronger. No problem with heat dispersal since all the pistons held heat so well.

WOW!
