CW,
My transmission went out and the truck was towed to the shop yesterday. I called the shop and they said that they have ordered some parts for it. In my opinion, it needs replaced. It started growling for 2 days, then it went out. I was going down the road and the truck revved like it was in neutral, but it was in drive. Then it wouldn't pull, I managed to get it home, but it was tough. The OD OFF light came on as well as the TRANS TEMP light during all of this. It will barely move in any gear, including reverse, if it moves at all. Sometimes it won't budge. There is no difference between 1-2-D when manually shifted either. When I pulled the dipstick out, smoke/ steam came out. Is it wasted completely? My question is will they replace the entire transmission or do they attempt to replace parts and rebuild it? I do not want the latter if at all possible. Thanks for your time in this matter.

P.S. I am still under warranty (32,500 miles)

At the chrysler dealership I work at we have to tear down and inspect the problem.Next take all the hard parts that need replacment and if the total of them is less than a unit it gets rebuilt.I'd rather have it rebuilt at the dealer than the reman piece of sh!t they would put in.

I talked to my dealer this morning and they said they would rebuild it if it was less than 70% screwed up. Otherwise, it would be replaced.

Guy's as much I need dealership servce departments to stay in bussiness to keep my job you are killing me. It "growled for two days" "slipping" "failling to engauge" "temp light" "OD OFF". When it first started to act up you should off parked it!!! When something is not right with a vechile continueing to drive it will only compound the problem in serious cases.

It growled for two days. This started Friday evening, and the service department is not open over the weekend. I have to have transportation, and my Dakota is the only form of it available. The other problems happened on Sunday and I did park it. It was towed Monday morning.
