Subject: Can't stop the pinging!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 V6 dakota sport that pings in low RPM's 1,000 to 3,000 whenever i'm going up hills or running the AC. I put high octain gas but it doesn't go away compleatly and I don't want to end up putting pricy gas in all the time. I've tried retarding the timing but it doesn't seem to help. Does anyone have any thought of what I should do or what the problem could be?! Thanx!

First of all i didn't think the timing was adjustable on newer models without a pcm reflash but you might want to check into a 180 degree thermo with a degree colder autolites. I would also use a really good cleaner (like chervon) at least 2 bottles and fill all the way up and don't refuel until completely empty. What this does is remove any carbon buildup in the heads that might be giving you a higher compression ratio. After that you can run 88 still but make sure it is good quality gas. Run amoco, texaco, or mobil1...please stayaway from fuelmart and supersaver gasstations. Gas is critical when it comes to predonating. Magnum engines are notorius for this (maybe the head design?) but there are bulletins out on it so if your under warrenty you can take it to the dealer and get the 'death' flash...

Yeah i turned the distributer, I guess things don't work like they do in the old days. I will look into reflashing my PCM, I did run some gas cleaner though it but didn't help much. FMI (for my information) =) what does reflashing the PCM do if anyone minds explaining thanx!

im willing to bet that after you moved the distributar it got worse. reason being, is that moving the dis. changes the sync on the injectors. take it to the dealer or someone with a scan tool, and have the sync set.
