Subject: why custom flashes so expensive ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I see custom PCM flashes anywhere from 400 - 600. Geez , thats alotta $$$. Is the price based on HP / dollar ? Or are they just money hungry ?
I dont know alot about what goes into "flashing" these things. Cant take that long to punch in a bunch of parameters and burn `em into the PCM.
Maybe someone can tell me why.

I think it has to do with how expensive the equipment is (although they should have paid that off by now), the fact that so few people do it (supply and demand), and that it's -not- as simple as just plugging in parameters. If you plug in the wrong information, you won't run. They need to compute those parameters, thats the most work I would think.

I susptect it has to do with liability. If some 16 year old kid wrecks his truck and they get sued for removing speed limiter, etc. they will lose their shirts. A risk/reward thing if you ask me.

R&D costs as well. They have to acquire the vehicles, then tack on overhead, programming time, dyno time and track time. Testing gets expensive very, very quickly.

Case in point: one of our test stands cost about $80 to set up and then $75/hr to operate. That's our cost. One six hour test costs us $530. That times 5 tests/wk and we're up to $2650. Of course, we had to pay $198,000 for the test stand in the beginning. First year of operation exceeds $335,000. Get my point??

Gibson Dual Sport, AirForce One air intake, Jet II, IAT, TPS, when are we gonna see some real parts??!!
