I took some pictures of the CAM Replacement today.
It's no big deal, but if you are looking for a way to save $25 dollors doing it, then you might like this.

I didn't get the WEDGE tool and done just fine without it. When you look at the Pictures you will see what I'm talking about.

There is nothing spectacular about it just some shots. The power difference was well worth the time and Money. I can't wait for KRC to get some heads and better cams and a killer intake for this beast. We will see.

Man that was dangerous. For your sake I hope those tensioners did not clamp down any. I made a wooden block that wedged the tensioners open while I did the swap, I also have some pics and will post when I get a chance.

Z-Tube, R/T Rims, SSB Rear Disc Conversion, Alpine Head-Unit, Infinity Kappa Speakers, SilverStar Headlights, HO Cams & Intake installed.

Nothing moved, the sprocket slid forward on the screw drivers and slid right back in place. I'm glad nothing moved also. Because me and it went for a ride to test every thing and at 135, it all held together well.

When I ordered my cam through the group buy a talked to the manager at Dodge Parts. I asked if the wedge came with the cam or would I have to buy it separately. He stated that the wedge was not necessary and the installation could be done without it.

I did not purchase the wedge, but I made my own.
The purpose of the wedge is to keep the timing chain tensioners separated. The wedge is not used to keep the sprocket from falling, but like I said to keep the tensioners separated. If you give it any slack the tensioners will overtighten and you will have to tear town the front of the engine to reset the timing.

Yates, I'm not doubting your method just looking out for my fellow Dak bro. BTW can't say my way is perfect either cause I hand made my wedge, just wanted everyone to make sure they know what it's for.

You are asking for trouble if you do it with out the wedge.

I am curious what the big deal is with the wedges. I am used to doing exactly what Yates did but on imports. If the tensioner pops out a little you simply grab the sprocket with chain attatched and lift upwards and wigle it back and forth to compress the tensioner. Then re-install the sprocket on the cam. Do the tensioners on the dodge 4.7 not re-compress once they move outward? I understand of course that you do not want the chain comeing of the crank sprocket. Thanks Yates for the pictures and CW thanks for all the tech support you give toall of us!!!!

The tensioners have a racheting type mechanism so if you when they sense any slack in the chain they compress and the only way to loosen them is to reset the tensioner and you can only do it by tearing down the front of the engine to get to the mechanism. Once again do not attempt to force the tensioners apart not even a little or you could cause some serious damage.

I didn't replace mine, they are the same as the ones in the stock HO Jeep. Also I only have 8,000 miles on my truck, as of Saturday. The cam caps weren't even smoothed out yet. The engine had a rocker tap before I started and I figured it needed adjustment, but after looking at the manual I realized they don't have adjustments. After changing the cams, and torquing the caps and sprocket bolt it doesn't sound like that any more. Hum, I don't think the tech on the assembly line that day brought his torque wrench to work. If and when my web site comes back up today you can see all the rust that was on the stock cams. I think they stored them out in the yard before the actual assembly. With the cams new and torquing every thing down and it sounding good now makes me want to start tearing the whole thing down and retorquing every thing on the truck.

Don't worry about the springs. I have 8000 miles on my swap and have really worked this motor no problems at all. Knock on wood.

No need to replace the "lifters". In fact, they're hydraulic lash adjusters that don't ride on the cam at all; they act as a fulcrum for the rockers to pivot on. Factory springs I think are fine if you still have the 6K rev limiter.

Uh, Rev limiter is gone, but 6k is as far as I'll take it anyway. Before the HO cams, about 5200 if I was stessing it. It seemed like it fell on it's face at 5k before. Now it is pulling as hard at 6k as it is at 4k. Sounds like a 1/4 mile dirt stocker when wound up though, it's screamin and pullin. I can't wait to get it back in continental US and get Bernd and Tom to put a turbo on it.

Lynn,

Awesome pics, nice work!

On another link about the differences in the HO and nonHO engines, someone found a comparison chart which indeed showed that the springs were different.

I'm not going to replace mine, it's a QC, now with Leer shell on the bed, 5 spd family car(truck). Course around these parts, your 4 door truck is a typical family car.

Sandman,

There is one in the install pics that shows how rusty the stocks were. The new cams had a smidge of rust but not much.

yates-in-DE, Thanks. I saw the pics on install. I read one of your posts that made it sound like you were going to post additional pics of the rust cams out of the vechile. I must have mis-understood. I thought that their must have been even more rusting that was not obvious in the previous pics. Again Thanks!!!!!LOL P.S. You know I could barely see that pick. Do you think you could make it a little bigger? LOL
