I have a question, i'v heard of many people punching a hole in their muffler to get better sound or such. I maybe want to do this to get some sound and not hurt performance and want a good location where to punch the hole. Plus, i have a back-up plan for this too, i can use this "muffler hole" excuse to my parents that i need a new muffler i'm wanting. So, can anybody help me out? I have a 98' ext. cab dak, with 3.9L with V6.

A turndown tip costs an entire 15 bucks for all the parts. You get the tip from an exhaust shop, that'll cost about 10 bucks to have an aluminum one made. You may need some bolts and a hangar from NAPA/AutoZone. Other then that you're all set. I know what an exhaust leak sounds like and that's what you'd have. When you went down the road or revved I would think, damn, that's ghetto, his exhaust needs to be fixed. In other words, do not do it.

hes talking about a turndown, this means u cut the tailpipe right after the muffler and install the turndown which pushes the exhaust down towards the ground. i did this and it sounds much deeper and louder than before w/ my flowmaster muffler. only problem is its louder in the cab, but no too bad

Not to mention it's cheap, has good clearance and you don't see some ugly ass tip (I'm not into tips sorry).

Well I'm cheap as hell, so I'm lookin into this more.

Question, if I tell a shop to make me one, how big should it be? Like, how abruptly should it turn down, a wide turn or SHARP turn? And when it turns down how far should it continue? Like 1-2 inches past the end of the turn?

Waltherone, if you are going to have a shop make you one you will need to know the diameter of your muffler's outlet. If it's the stock one, or one that fit as a direct replacement, the muffler's inside diameter is 2 and 1/2 inches. Therefore, you will need a tip that has a 2 and 1/2 inch outside diameter inlet.

Heh, turndowns aren't a complicated science, but I have also wondered some of the different effects of various turndowns.

About the only difference I have found is a complete ninety degree angle seems to be deeper, opposed to straighter pipe souding having more of a roar to it, but not quite as deep. The difference seems to be there, but not a large one. Most shops do not have a mandrel bender -- priced one lately -- so they just use their kink machine and do a moderate turn down. A sharper turn would affect the inside size on these machines. Most shops will make a more of a curved pipe and then cut it. So the end actually directs it towards the back a bit more.

The distance after the curve I have no idea about. Being as it's aimed downwards, you don't have much room to work with. I was considering turning mine towards the driveshaft a tad so maybe it would reflect at more of an angle instead of right back at the pipe and muffler.

Also, try to keep it away as far from the cab as possible. I would love to hear how a turndown after the Y pipe or maybe two after an H pipe. It would be an intimidating sound, but wouldn't exactly be daily driver safe.

Maybe I should get some pictures of my ghetto setup so you all can see.

Does the distance after the muffler it's cut off affect the sound, or is it the angle toward the ground? For example, what if I were to just cut off the pipe above the axle right after the kinked-curve so it's angling downward and toward the back, right behind the axle? I assume it's a bit louder the closer you get to the muffler, is it a LOT louder? I don't want that redneck no-muffler sound that most of the people around me have. Preferably more like a stock R/T but a little louder (i have a 4.7) so do you think cutting it off where I mentioned would make enough difference? It would also eliminate the ground clearance problem, save me money, and....well yeah, what do you think?

I don't mean to jump on the thread, but here it goes my question!

On a 2000 Dak, can you just take out the muffler completely? I mean with two pre cats and a cat would it really be that loud?

It will be loud, not bad enough to get you pulled over but it buzzes really loud in the cab, i ran around without a muffler for a while and it sounded like crap. It sounded like a plymouth reliant with a rusted out exhaust. Spend the $75 on a performance muffler, Flowmaster 40 series sounds great.

I got my muffler completely cut out and then had them weld a stright pipe in.....and for the tip I had them cut it off right after the curve and weld a tip on... It sounds awesome I have got tons of complements and it only cost 75 bucks and the tip i had put on was 25.
